“very bad experience”

we found this hotel on line and it seemed very nice, it also had 4 stars so we decided to e-mail them and ask if they had a room with a balcony, mrs popi (the manager of the hotel) e-mailed us back saying that they had a room with a balcony available for the 3 nights 4, days that we wanted to stay there, for 80 euros per night, so we booked the room. As soon as we got to the hotel, the maid took us to a room with no balcony and we said no, so she took us to an other room through a hall way with windows, we go in the room no balcony again and when we asked her where the balcony was she showed us the hallway out side our room with the windows. She pointed at a door and told us that, that was the only room with a balcony and it was taken. We started discussing about going to an other hotel that we had seen and only then she picked up her cell phone and called this mrs popi and she told the maid to go ahead and give us the room next to the taken one. We go in,it was very nice and big with a beautiful balcony, but tiny shower, you could not move in it, the plumbings were broken, i went to open the door to our room to go outside and the door nob came of. I woke up in the morning to have breakfast and they served me 2 slices of dry bread, some jam, coffee, 1 little container of butter and some orange juice, I could not believe it. On our third day, the phone rings around 12 noon and its mrs popi which we had not seen at all and she told us that we had to leave the room because she had double booked it!!! she was lucky that my boyfriend picked up the phone because if it was me i would have sent her to hell. I was so shocked that I did not know how to react, we packed our things and moved to the first floor next to the reception, that had nothing, just a window. What can I say! Of course I would not recomend this damp (because i can not call it a hotel) to anyone, it was the worst experience in my whole life. I should have thought of calling EOT which is the greek turist organisation but I didn't

“Beware!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

I had money stolen out of my room, at least 70 euro. I was only 99% sure of this, but after reading that this has happened to previous guests it seems likely that it is a pervasive problem involving hotel staff, specifically the maid. After reporting the theft to the owners I was told, that "because you cannot remember the exact amount of money you had in your wallet, we do not believe you." It was an extremely strange response. The security at the hotel is lax and room keys remain unsupervised at the front desk, while the owners talk outside or work in the office.

The next day the owners reported that the maid had seen me in another group members room. The owners then accused me of having entered another room to steal from a friend of mine. It was humiliating and false, especially fishy in light of having been robbed at their hotel the previous day. The owner yelled in Greek, which I do not speak, and pushed me violently. Obviously, I would have left immediately, but our group was participating in a conference on the island and alternate accommodation would have been difficult to secure. The staff were careful voice these strange accusations to the more senior and important members of our group, in an attempt to discredit me. I believe it was also an attempt to protect their maid from any other theft accusations. I have never experienced any treatment like this in a hotel stay anywhere, and I have traveled extensively in Africa, South/ North America, Australia and Europe.

Another caution, after any rain the outdoor marble staircase becomes extremely slippery. I fell down this late one night. After informing the hotel owners that it would be a good idea to put a grip surface or a sign in Greek/ English of "slippery when wet," I was told that "it was my fault for falling." Someone is going to break and arm or worse and this hotel will face a lawsuit of some sort. I am in my 20's and fit, but someone older struggling with the stairs, which have no handrail, is really going to get hurt. Utterly pathetic response to a legitimate problem!

Other problems were lousy breakfast, spotty wi-fi in the upper rooms (our room #5 had no wi-fi coverage), no laundry service (although after asking several staff one did comply with washing a few items), unclean water (I got pink eye, most likely from the shower water...do not drink the water) and as previously mentioned lax to no security.

Considering I was traveling with a large group and staying for a week the treatment and theft were outrageous and bizarre. Stranger still, at times the staff were eager to please and seemed to forget that they had accosted me days before in broken English and veiled accusations. I refused to speak or look the owners in the face until they would apologize. They never apologized for my fall down the stairs, having my money taken in their hotel or accusing me of accessing another guests room with the intent to steal! So mean spirited and rude. If I wanted to completely have my trip ruined I would have involved the Greek police.

Otherwise, given different more forward thinking ownership and a staff with their eyes on service and not petty theft this could be a very nice hotel for the price. The island is unique and very charming. I tried to spend all of my time and money away from a very shady hotel staff! The October weather was lovely and the towns residents seemed sweet and helpful.

“Secluded and so cute”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

First of all, the island of Hydra is a must, I feel like most folks don't realize how great it is.
I would only recommend 1 to 2 days max. Afterall there isn' t much to do.

Hotel Miranda was perfect, inexpensive, they had everything you needed. The owners were always present and helpful. The food for breakfast was continental plus, hard boiled eggs, bread, greek yogurt, coffee, juice, etc. The rooms were clean. The only downside is no safes, and the bathrooms were tiny. Kind of rustic but perfect for a night or two. A close walk from the Ferry and to town, like 3 minutes.
I would go back!

“magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2009

We could not be happier with our stay at Hotel Miranda. The building is beautiful, breakfast in the courtyard delicious and idyllic, and our room in the front of the hotel on the second floor perfect..spotless, roomy, furnished with character, and a gorgeous terrace with view of the harbor. Yannis was more like a friend than an innkeeper. He constantly greeted us most cordially and offered us great suggestions for walks and restaurants. I would compare this place to one of the choice vintage houses on Nantucket, but for much much less ! In a magical place like Hydra, staying at the Miranda after all the tourists return to their cruise boats is like dying and going to heaven.

“A wonderful surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2009

The staff and location were perfect. They were very helpful and offered an insight to the island that was very generous and sincere. The room was beautiful and the lack of cars on the island made for a wonderful atmosphere to wake up to, instead of car horns and engines we awoke to sounds of birds and the wind bowing through the trees. Beautiful room view of the port and a peaceful and shady breakfast patio scattered with azaleas were also great little touches. Thank you. Recommend highly.
