Tracy, Dave, Liam and Ryan have been to Samos 6 times and me and Dave have just returned from our 7th visit after going on our own. We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with Filimon, Mary and Nicos and we could not have wished for a more special time. The day started with a Champagne and fruit breakfast delivered to the room by Filimon and ended with a champagne supper, sat round the bar. Filimon, Mary, Nicos, Dave and I then spent most of the night dancing to traditional greek music. It was a perfect day.
Everytime we have visited Samos and the Mary hotel we have always been made to feel like one of the family. We have shared some very special times with Filimon and his family and have met some wonderful and intresting people.
The Mary is very clean and Filimon is very proud of his hotel. If you are fortunate to visit this hotel ask about its history..its facinating. We have stayed in most of the rooms at the Mary but this last one had to be one of the best. We had a studio on the roof, the views out to sea were stunning and it had a very private balcony. We also had our own sunbeds up there. The rooms are very traditional and well kept. There is plenty of storage although maybe a few more hangers in the wardrobes would be an improvement! (I do take a lot of clothes though). The toilet and shower room have always been clean and on one occasion we had a blockage in the shower drain that was sorted out immediately. This time we had a small light that was not working and it was sorted out within 10 mins. The kitchen facilities are good enough to make breakfast and light lunches but you would not be able to cook a Sunday roast in there (as if you'd want to). The rooms are cleaned and towels and bedding changed 2-3 times during a fortnighly stay depending on how busy the Mary is. The bins are also emptied at that time but this has never been a problem for us as we would empty them ourselves if needed. Samos has to be the most unspoiled Greek Island I have ever visited and the resort of Kambos is no exception to this. In the past 7 years nothing has changed. Eating out is a pleasure and very reasonable. Both Filimon and Nicos are only too happy to reccommend places to eat. Leonardis, Anna's and Nostos are favorites of ours. Not a McDonalds in sight thank god!!! If you're lucky as we have been on many occasions Mary will send some home cooked delights for you to sample. Mmm!. There are a some good bars that stay open late but never too noisy, New Centre Cafe and Heaven on Earth are the ones we particulaly enjoy. The pool bar at the Mary is open most nights with a selection of traditional Greek music and Filimons own choice!! which is usually good. If it is not to your taste then he will change it. Local residents as well as guests sit round drinking and chatting and generally putting the world to rights!! If the bar is not going to open then Filimon will tell you, but as perviously mentioned there are other places to drink and be merry!!
On a recent walk back from Psilli Ammos we stopped at a pool bar called Mystic Ocean. What a find, good food, tranquil music, comfy sofa's etc. It was late when we arrived back at the Mary still in our beach wear and this for us is what makes Filimon and his family so special.. he told us that he and his dad were worried about us as they had not seen us all day.. I do think that they would have actually come to look for us if we had not have turned up. That thoughtfulness is why we return year after year.. we will pass on going to a pretentious 5* hotel where you are just a room number and a faceless tourist.. and continue to go to Samos and stay at the Mary where we feel valued and really cared for.xxxxxx Roll on next year when we hope to meet some of our special friends xxxxxxx
