After the gruelling two hour and bit slow drive from the airport it was so refreshing to arrive at a Hotel that immediately caught your eye. Dropped off at the end of a little lane and a short walk where your cases were delivered for you and met by one of the brothers who manages this hotel along with his parents. Great welcome and introduction. Hotel is set on about five levels, the top two or three have the best views, lower ones face the rear of the main complex . We were lucky enough to have the very top floor which is not suitable for those less able due to the climb but hey it was worth it as this is where the hotel lives up to its name. An unobscured view of all the bay of Petra, fields and mounains, stunning. Simple room with ample cupboard space and nice size balcony. Plenty of hot water from the shower. Only downside was the excessive charge for aircon/fridge. Aircon was €5 per day and the fridge €3 per day. Thankfully our room grabbed enough breeze so as not to cook at night so we declined the extra charges. So quiet tucked away down this lane overlooking the farms and sea, no noisy disco's or bars.
Pool was large and spotlessly clean and very well managed, plenty of sunbeds. The bar was very nice with its own snack menu and evening meal menu, had a much welcomed couple of large glasses of Mythos upon arrival to relax ourselves even further. Breakfast is a cold buffet style. Staff/family are very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a small library and internet access at a small cost including wireless. Every Friday is BBQ night so if you want can stay and enjoy this for €14 each which includes some drinks. After visiting other parts of the Western coast soon realised that this hotel and its location was a gem and very worthy of its 3 stars, was probably the only hotel in the resort with such potential views.
Petra is a stunning postcard view resort, no noisy bars or discos anywhere, just the distant chime of the church bells across the bay, local fishermen and traders going about their business. Beautiful mix of old and new buildings with lovely little lanes and shopping streets. We used Nirvana travel which is located just passed the square on the sea front for our money exchange which was far better than the hotel rate and got between €1.15 and €1.12 for our sterling travellers cheques. There are very few if any exchange outlets around due to charging systems by the banks who have made it less attractive for these type of agencies to sell, the manageress was very helpful and so glad we found them. Numerous restaurants line the main sea front road but our favourites were within the town square area. Kalderimi which is a grill restaurant that has stunning gardens and is just up the lane towards the rock at Petra next to the square, great food which cost the two of us on average €20 - €27 for a greek salad starter and main courses with house wine or beers. Our favourite was the Womens co-operative which when you see the views you can see why, a good table needs to be reserved by putting your name in their diary but they all have fantastic position. The food here is very special with all the home made, home produced type menu, similarly priced. A gyros kebab from the grill to take away will cost you €2.30 at the Kalderimi. There is one at Molyvos which is called the Gyros centre and has absolutely out of this world views as Molyvos is positioned on a high location, same price with great service for that faster type of food. There is a Ouzo distillery in the centre of Petra which you will soon find if you follow your nose.
A bus runs pretty much every hour or so to Anaxos, Molyvos or the hot springs at Eftalou with a fixed price of €1.40 any destination. Taxi will cost you €6 to Molyvos from Petra which is about ten minutes, we walked it one day in just over an hour where the views are stunning.
Try to buy any food shopping from Proton a large supermarket in Petra near the petrol station as the costs can add up at the smaller ones with the € strength against the £. Typical 500ml bottle of beer will cost between €1.00 - €1.20 in there and €2.50 in restaurant or bar.
A very quiet resort with a lovely rustic sandy beach stretching the distance of the resort. Sea temp was notably cooler than expected and varied from day to day and which part of the island you were on. Plenty of shade under the trees on the beach or the sunbeds that are offered free by the bars if you buy drinks. Daytime temp got up to late 30's C with a welcoming breeze.
Would without doubt go back to this resort and Hotel without any doubt.
