I don't use the term 'hellish' lightly when describing this hotel. All of the reviews discussing the street noise are not exaggerations. Nor are the descriptions about the horrible beds and scary bathrooms. We were going to fly out of Corfu after having stayed on other parts of the island for a week and figured 2 nights in Corfu Town would be a nice change. We could not have been more wrong.
We used Booking.com to find this hotel. It looks like there aren't many in the area. There are others which aren't found on booking.com -- use them, not this place.
We chose the hotel because we were on a budget although the prices weren't that far from many of the other hotels. It was a nightmare. The story is long, but bare with me:
1st Night:
"Ok, the room is very basic." Our self justification was that we'll be out exploring the town so we won't notice. When we came back to the rooms, we began to hear the road sounds. At first we figured it was because the windows were open, but closing them made no difference. Then we figured the sound of every car passing and causing the sewer cover to 'clang' loudly would begin to stop when traffic slowed at night. It never stopped. Until 3am it the road noise and clanging sewer cover kept us up. This is the same road noise that the owner has said 'What do people expect, me to make the noise go away?!'. A start would be to get the sewer cover fixed or windows that -even start- to muffle the sound.
The basic rooms became torture chambers when we finally put ourselves on the beds. They were old. They were lumpy. They had springs poking you in places that you didn't want to be poked. The pillows smelled and were stained under the pillow case -- and also paper thin. The bedspreads, when you turned them over, looked like the lining of a hamster's cage. It was ravaged as if something that had been trying to claw its way out in the middle of the night. Any cleanliness of the sheets was completely undone by these gross bedspreads.
"The bathroom is so small that you need to change your mind before entering it." We soon realized that bathrooms in Albania, the poorest country in Europe, had been better than this one. It was small (ok, no prob). It didn't have consistent water temp (ok, a little frustrating). It had electrical wires sticking out of the water heater next to your head in the shower (ok. a disturbing). It had no water pressure to flush (ok, a little gross at times). While none of these things on its own was horrific, in total it was.
The advertised Wifi only seemed to work during the day -- when you were out of the hotel and at some other establishment. The claims would be 'It works for me on my office computer, so it must be working!' but in reality the Wifi routers were broken, not allowing people in the hotel to use them. If you got lucky you had 5 minutes of it working, but it was slow and there was bad connectivity. Not all of the rooms could even get the signal, despite being advertised as such.
The hotel common areas were mixed. The lobby area seemed ok, albeit a little like being at an old Tube station with a wooden ticket booth. The restaurant and lounge were ok. The floors everywhere near the room were disgusting. The dirt in the rugs was the only thing keeping the floors from falling through. The lift was small (only 2 people at a time) and if you looked up you saw a thick lining of dirt on the lighting (with finger prints writing 'clean me!').
The only good thing about this hotel is that they run a hotel -- not something that could actually hurt mankind kind with their ineptitude.
