Stayed at Hotel Nefeli for a week from 7th September with my fiancee, 3 year old daughter, in-laws and sister in law + partner and 2 year old boy. First time in Kos, and the in-laws 12th visit in 12 years - I can see why!! The bad reveiws I've read about this Hotel and Island I just cant understand, if anyone complains about this place then it is their own fault. For what you are offered online, it delivers and more - The Hotel Nefeli is not a 5 star all inclusive, and thank goodness for that! If you want to be a sheep go to the Blue Lagoon round the corner!!
On arrival we were welcomed by Nikos with open arms, along with the other staff who are his family. He has a brother called Dimitri who also owns an amazing Greek restaurant "Hellas" in Kos Town which is a must see. It is the people that make this place - The service is just amazing, you can't ask for anything else and they all have such a great sense of humour. Everything for Wilma behind the bar is "No problem!" and Nikos would arrange absolutely anything you asked of him - Really really helpful. I also need to mention Iten (I think that's her name?) the cleaning lady, who is one of the kindest people you will ever meet - She bought my daughter and nephew gifts of teddy bears, drinks, sweets, toys etc every day and was just so happy all the time. Lovely lady.
In response to the bad reviews - You DO have to pay 6 euros a day for air con, but when you consider their electricity bills of people who leave it on ALL day it makes sense to me. Also if you took some foresight and contacted the hotel about it prior to your stay you may not be so surprised! Regarding mosquitos - They do fly in the room, as they would anywhere as Hot as Kos, but the trick is to be prepared and come with Mossie spray/one of these electric plug in repellants and leave the lights OFF when the doors are open. Not so hard eh?
Towels with holes and being grey is a huge exaggeration - That, or you must've been very rude to the staff!! We had three rooms and towells and sheets were changed every other day, so no complaints at all there.
Breakfast did change daily, and for a continental breakfast was actually very pleasant. Given they have their own kitchen staff and day time menu's you actually have choices of all sorts - They would happily cook you whatever you asked for!
We ate at the Nefeli twice during our week, once on the first night where I had Chicken Souvlaki, and again on the Greek Buffet night - Both were faultless!! The meat is so so fresh and tender and the flavours are amazing. As soon as a dish is nearly finished they will bring out a new one, and this keeps happening until the restaurant is empty. Really really good, and I am quite possibly the fussiest eater anyone has ever seen. One reveiw said you didn't receive any greens or fruit on the side - Perhaps if you ask for them you'll get them? ;)
There was nothing wrong with the pool at all - It was so clean!! Nikos was out there himself cleaning it a few times while we were there so there is no arguing with that. I can't understand how it would've been dirty?!
I've been to 4/5 star All Inclusive hotels in Lanzarote, Turkey, Crete etc but this was by far my favourite Holiday out of them all. The staff made it - The rooms were clean, the food was good, and the weather was amazing (up to 34c!) but without the staff it wouldn't be half as good. If you go on Holiday to be a "Starer" and sit watching everyone else all day long from the front of a restaurant of your sunbed then this isn't for you - Stay with your boring all inclusives. If you're looking to get to know the locals, try the traditional Greek food, and have a Holiday you won't forget then this is perfect. Some places to definitley try at the Sunburnt Arms in Kos Town where Giannis and his wife Sam work, Dimitri's "Hellas" Traditional Greek Restaurant, Toms Sunset Arms inbetween Lambi and Kos Town, and the Restaurants in the Turkish Village. Another would be to hire a Quad Bike/Car and get over to Paradise Beach near Kefalos, where the infamous "Bubble Beach" is - The bubbles really are there if you swim out and it's a must see for any snorkeler!!
Will be seeing Nikos and his family same time next year - A week certainly wasn't long enough for us!!!
Room Tip: A/C is 6 euros a day but works very very well, room 211 was very quiet!
