We stayed at the Kantouni Beach Hotel from the 26th September-2nd October 2010 as part of a two week twin centre holiday.
We arrived in Kos in the early hours of the morning on the 26th September, we were transferred to a small beach taverna in the kos resort of Masthari to await our early morning transfer to Kalymnos.
The ferry crossing was fast and stress free, and the sea air blasting in your face was a welcome treat after a night without sleep.
Our rep, the wonderful Anna informed us that due to it been sunday the local church situated by our hotel would be very busy and our coach would not be able to drive past, she said we would have to go on a tour of the island dropping off the other tourists to their chosen hotels and then by the time we got back to our hotel it would have quietened enough for the coach to drive by..
An hour or so later.. The church was still busy, The driver speaking little english, us speaking little greek, pointed us in the direction of the hotel, trolly suitcases with uneven road surfaces with a steep incline and no sleep equals frustration!!
In all honesty our first impressions of the hotel were seen through tired eyes, I remember thinking'' Oh no what have we booked here, The hotel looked unkempt and hidden behaind a forest of bamboo.. please read on...
We were checked in in no time at all, our room was upgraded free of charge from a studio to an apartment, the room was basic, but clean and spacious and the balcony had near perfect views of the pool and Kantouni Beach.
As it was late September, the hotel was very quiet and consisted of ourselves a single traveller and 3 couples and a few backpackers on overnight stays passing through, two of the couples had been been returning for over 15 years and has built solid friendships with the hotel owner Themis and the Bar manager Manolis! :))))
Some of our best memories are of sitting in the bar area, watching the most magnificent sunsets and accepting the fact that we were a stones throw away from the sea lapping at the shore.. Perfect!!
During the day the hotel did become busy at around lunchtime, and people did come in to take advantage of the hotels facilities, such as the poolside snack bar and etc, The food served by Manolis and his team was of a high standard and we can personally vouch for the Greek salad, chicken club sandwich and the cheeseburger, very very nice!!!
We found the breakfast served was basic but look we didnt pay for a 5* breakfast so didn't expect a 5* breakfast what we got was Toast, Local cheese, Jam and fruit juice and coffee, and not forgetting the homebaked cakes provided by Themi and her team.. Yum yum yum let me tell you..:))) We had breakfast every day of our stay and found no reason to complain..
Referring back to our first impressions, as we said we were very tired. Looking back now the hotel is without doubt a little greek charmer, it blends perfectly into its rustic greek surroundings and it retains a certain feel of authenticity and tradition.. I can see why many of its guests return year after year, I can only imagine it must feel like 'coming home' !!
Themi and Manoli and the whole Kantouni beach hotel team get the big thumbs up from us, from start to finish we were made to feel welcome and upon leaving didnt really want to leave, we would love to return one day in the not too distant future and have already recommended this hotel to friends and family.
Thankyou for reading and I hope you too enjoy your stay. Christin and Michael x x x
