“tranquil heaven”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

The Alkyon hotel is an ideal base for a stay in Syros. Katherine, Frank and their family are most welcoming and full of ideas and suggestions for exploring the island.

Our big problem was arriving out of season, well the end of the season. The hotel was quite empty and there was a sense of we were inconveniencing the owners by being there.

“Vacations of the highest level / Vacances de haut niveau”

How many places do you know where you can relax and at the same time swim at the pool, excercise, relax at the bar and communicate with others?
Where you can leave your room key on the door with no second thoughts?
Where they remember your favorite meal and prepare it for you?
Where you can taste a variety of dishes, rich cooking and excellent quality?
Where you feel a lump in your throat at the moment of departure?
Where you are neither nameless nor they treat you as a client but as a friend?
If, in an inhumane world, warm and personal relations and services are among your requirements, well... you have come to the right place!
We visit the Alkyon every year since 12 years ago and every time we are received as if it were the first.
We've found a second family here we can't do without.

“Trnquility & kindness”

This is an ideal location for those seeking peace & quiet. Emanic's review is totally unfair to rate this hotel poor just because it doesn't correspond to what he or she was looking for. It's a bit like going to McDonald's and then complaining they didn't serve caviar. If you want noise and activities you simply don't come here. You go elsewhere. We came here because TA influenced us saying it is quiet and isolated. We were not disappointed. Those looking for 5 star sophistication would probably be disappointed too. This is a simple establishment but has all a reasonable person needs for a holiday. The pool is beautiful. The sea view is also fantastic, even though you're not right next to the sea. The beach is about 1 mile away. However the star of the place is Catherine and her family whose unfailing welcome makes one feel more of a friend or family than a hotel customer. Some people have complained of difficulty of access. This is not really true. There is a bus stop not too far away, but the risk is that the driver does not realize where you want to get off. Once you know where the bus stop is there's no problem.

“Great place to stay - with a lovely family atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2009

Having originally seen some reviews on Trip Adviser we decided to make contact direct with this hotel. The owners Catherine and Jacques were so helpful and great at communicating. We booked it direct with them and travelled as a part of 7. Although the hotel is a little off the beaten track this is one of the benefits. There is no traffic and it is very peaceful. The owners were very helpful and knowlegdeable - they arranged our taxi pick up and rental car and also helped us with many local hints and tips. The hotel was clean and smart. It seems to only have 2 stars which I think is so wrong - yes the rooms are simple but they are clean, well maintained and sutiable for a holiday stay. We had adjoining rooms for the children (2) and my wife and I. Each room had a balcony and ensuite shower room. The pool was lovely - we used it every day and it was cleaned regularly. The breakfast was simple but effective with addiional food on offer at a cost if required. The evening meals were great - there was always a local dish which was well appreciated for those who wanted to try something typically greek. We would definately come back and would like to thank C & J for their care and concern to make our stay very pleasurable.

“a really very nice place to stay...”

The hotel and it's owners Jack and Catherine are very nice and friendly people. The hotel is not located on the beach but has a nice view on the sea, it is very clean, the rooms are simple with a greek style, there is a big swimming pool and it's a very quiet place. The staff is friendly and helpful. We rented a car and travelled all around the island. There are a lot of really nice walks to do, specially in the Northern part of the island where you will have the pleasure to discover - after a few hours walk - deserted beaches, incredible old rocks, very good tavernas and nice food, though curiously not a lot of fresh fishes... The capital, Ermopoulis, is really worth visiting, it has an incredible Venitian neighborhood and a few museums as well as an opera. A visit to Ano Syros is also recommended, have a coffe in the oldest coffee of this oldest part of Ermopoulis is a must, from there you will get the most incredible view on the city, the sea and the boats. We enjoyed also a lot the nice terrases of the tavernas in Ermopoulis where you can have a really good greek lunch or dinner (try the chicken at Ano Syros style)!. We were there for 2 weeks at the beginning of September and it was quite warm and windy. We will come back there in June 2009 as we had the incredible chance to won a one week stay there ! The owners made a pictures contest and we won! We can also say that a lot people and families are coming there for more than 10 years, this is certainly a good sign!

  • Liked — friendly atmosphere, nice view and swimming pool, good prices
  • Disliked — bath room (shower) a little too small
