“E.x.c.e.l.l.e.n.t - a true hotel with a family ambience...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

When I arrived, it was night time. Us travelling together included myself, my father and his sister (my aunt). I was very tired and did not want to deal with any bad hotels or bad service that I have experienced a few times.

When we arrived, we stepped into an absolutely charming and enchanting front room. With seats, old fashioned furnitures, many items hung up on the walls, ambience lightning etc. Every single item in the room were selected with great taste. I felt like I was catapulted back to the 1930s but still stuck in the present times!
A young man approached us and dealt with our booking efficiently. Our suitcases were taken to our room. This man is called Alexandros and the hotel was named after him.

Our room was just as lovely as the front reception room. The art on the walls were just fantastic. The artist does know how to paint properly. From the windows, we could see the swimming pool and the view beyond. There are gardens every where and we have to walk through the gardens to get to our room and this just made our journey more fascinating. The bathroom was not as good as the bedroom. It's just a bathroom. The bonus of the bathroom were the natural shampoo/conditioner and soap on hand which is great as I'm allergic to the chemical and supermarket brands. Good shower too :) We had arrived on the 1st September and this was a happy ending to the day.

The next day was 2nd September. Every year on 2nd September, which is the name day of Alexandros. A lady came round to all of the guests offering sweets to celebrate the name day. This was such a lovely gesture and made her a great hostess in my opinion. Offering that personal touch.

The breakfast was amazing. To be frank, it was not flamboyant. Nor posh. Or done with any flair. It was amazing, because the right kind of food was served. Not too much or too little. You begin at the right side of the buffet by getting yourself a tray. There is a machine which presses fresh orange juice for you. Everything is organic and comes from Sifnos island itself. Some veg/fruit come from the trees within the hotel grounds!
You then proceed onto having either tea, coffee or espresso which comes from an actual espresso machine with espresso capsules. I was impressed indeed as I am an enormous espresso fan. Then you come across muesli, dried apricots, dates, nuts, cornflakes, FRESH milk (not the UHT or tinned milk, urgh!) and then fried eggs and bacon. Not overdone or underdone. Nor do they swim in oil either. Onwards, there are breads and cakes of all sorts, plus ham, cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives and then fresh jams. (All jams made within the hotel I am sure!) Then different juices. The hostess was constantly checking that everything was in order and topping up any coffees/teas/milks that were low in volume. She also cleared away tables and did the tidying up. A true hostess indeed, not a snobbery kind whom uses a waitress to do the work for her.

I cannot fault anything. I loved the hotel, its decor, the breakfast, the coffee and the swimming pool. The gardens were lovely and there is a car park at the entrance and at the bottom of the gardens.

I highly suggest that you stay here for a few days and you will truly feel relaxed. I don't go to Greek islands often and this time, when I went, this hotel combined with Sifnos island, made my island holiday a special one.

“great hotel with fantastic family hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

The staff here were absolutely fantastic, they couldn't do enough for you!!! its family run and they are all smiles everyday. (except the father, he was a bit of a misery). Very big hotel and really big pool with lots of sunbeds and couches under shade to just chill out! they also have a bar but as we went end of season they only did toasted sandwiches from the bar. We had the buffet breakfast each morning which had LOADS of variety and good quality. The fresh orange juicer was my favorite. Rooms were clean and nice bed which is always good! we had a great balcony that overlooked the pool. A 5min to a beach and restaurants. We also walked about 25mins to a lovely bay where the water was so clear, can't remember the name but worth a visit. The bus stop was directly outside the hotel which takes to to other parts of the island.

“I Feel I've Been Robbed!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

This hotel was such a disappointment and it had the stamp “Recommended by TripAdvisor” on its door so I decided to write my first review. The hotel is located near a beach named Platys Gialos. We stayed here in August 2011. It resembles a small village inside, containing about 50 rooms, each one linked by small paths and most of them are located in various levels! It also has a pool and a pool bar which is nice if you are a tourist and all you want is to relax (and if the sound of about 10 kids is not annoying to you!).

The rooms were clean enough and average sized. The bed was OK and the breakfast decent. And this is just about everything that is good in this hotel.

The hotel is 150 meters away from the beach but the road is very uphill (on the way back) so it’s not advised for elderly people who want to swim at the beach. My girlfriend booked the room and arrived 3 days earlier than me. The first thing she discovered was that the phone was not working - when she said that to the owner he replied that he knew this: “Only this room and a second in the hotel have phones which are not working but we called a technician and he told us that they cannot be fixed--there is nothing we can do” was his exact words. This can be a problem, especially if 2 out of the 3 major cell phone carriers in Greece have no network at the hotel! So no room service either!

The bathroom and the shower were old! The shower was so old it needed an algorithm to work! We actually needed first to switch to shower mode (and keep the switch there with our hands) and then open the water – otherwise the shower wouldn’t work!

The A/C in the room is the cheapest possible one, the BTUs are not enough to provide a cool temperature so anyone who is sweaty will have problems sleeping. Also the A/C was not maintained because it made an annoying sound when it was working for more than a few hours!

I left the best for last, which was our last day. As we were chilling in our room at about 7 at night, we heard sounds of construction work done at room right next to us. The reason was that their door was not working! So we couldn’t relax either due to the loud hammering! Then we went out and came back at around 2 in the morning, where we discovered that the toilet flush was not working. We phoned the owners who were sleeping (there is no 24-hour reception at this hotel) and they said: “we’ll look at it tomorrow”. It was late, we were tired and we couldn’t use the toilet—a BASIC necessity!

Next day was the checkout. I tried very politely to explain that when you say you provide something and the price is X and I agree then it’s OK, but when one does NOT provide what is expected, then I won’t pay the full price of your services, because I never got the services I paid for. The man didn’t even care to respond, the woman was so impolite, rude and sarcastic that I decided to write a review about this. Regarding the toilet issue she said: “Things like that happen, you have to deal with it” (meaning I either have to hold it and not sleep for 8 hours, or I have to become the plumber and fix the toilet issue myself). This is completely rude and unacceptable when one is paying 165 euros per night! A working toilet is a basic necessity and even if they cannot control if it doesn’t work then they should be running to fix the issue, at whatever time!

Regarding the noise from construction work she said: “What is one to do, things like that also happen”. Regarding the phone she didn’t say anything and regarding the shower (after we had told her that we had to think about how to use it) she said, in an extremely sarcastic way: “It’s not bad to do some thinking during your vacation”. She then swiped the credit card as fast as she could in order not to start negotiating the prices and she said “there you go”.

I’ve done some thinking and this hotel is terrible, the service and the attitude of the owners were the worst I have ever seen and it’s a shame they have the Tripadvisor recommendation on their front door! I should have understood something is wrong when I saw that the pricing of this hotel on Booking.com was more expensive than the pricing on their website – this is something I have never seen before. For those who are seriously looking at this hotel: you have been warned!

“Really nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011

My wife and I visited Sifnos late July, beginning of August (hi season for Greek islands). The hotel is at a very nice spot of the island. The sea is lovely and there are 2-3 picturesque tavernas with good food. Most of the rooms have very nice sea view. If you can, spend few extra Euros and ask for a room with sea view. Not partial sea view but full sea view. The service is exceptional! The rooms are cosy and nicely furnished. A bit overpriced but Sifnos is a quite expensive island. Enjoy your stay.
