“A clean, simple, lovely hotel in a quiet part of Santorini run by a most hospitable family.”

We stayed in August 2010 without knowing where we were going (someone made the arrangements for us and recommended this hotel). The price was unbelievably INEXPENSIVE, especially compared to the rates in other towns. Family-owned and run, the hosts were hospitable beyond compare.  After our acquaintance gave us the information, I called the hotel to learn more. They rented a car for us which was waiting at the airport. Nice touch.

Finding the hotel was a little tricky at first since we had never been to the island, but after the first time, we had no trouble afterward. In fact, on the way there we got lost and had a lot of fun just driving around.  Anyway, Akrotiri is located at the southern tip of the island. It's a quiet town only a few minutes drive from the bustle of Fira and Oia. Go here if you want to wake up to the sound of bells or a rooster instead of the throngs of tourists from cruise ships in the bigger towns.

The room was spotless and simple with a private bathroom and shower.  The room also had a small but usable balcony with furniture overlooking the heated salt water pool. Enjoying a bottle of wine from there watching the sunset was lovely.  Since the room was in the back of the hotel, I was worried that we wouldn't have a room with a view but it was great. Breakfast was simple and inexpensive.

Most important was the service from the owners, and I think this made all the difference.  They recommended fantastic, NON-TOURISTY restaurants that were moderately priced.  They told us what spots to go to and for what (here for coffee only, there for a drink only, which beaches had this or that, and so on). In short, we put our faith in them and their recommendations and did not regret it for a second. They even arranged for us to take a ship around the island which was worth every penny (food, drinks, music, swimming, hot springs, hike on the volcano, sunset, etc).  Transportation picked us from and dropped us at the hotel. Make sure to ask about it.

There are so many islands on Greece and so many places to see, but our experience with this hotel is the most compelling reason to go back to Santorini.

“Absolutely fantastic place”

I stayed in this hotel with my husband and 4-year old son and we all were so happy there. Everything was great, we got a very warm welcome and we liked all the family managed this hotel so much. Our room was much better than we expected, it was maisonette throught we payed just for double room special reduced price and a child stayed free. The room was wonderfully decorated in ethnic style, with good wooden furniture and huge balcony. Caldera view from our balcony was so amazing that we screamed "Wow!" when we saw it for the first time and enjoyed it every morning having breakfast and every evening watching beautifull sunset. Location and views are really perfect for Akrotiri because hotel located on the road that lead to Faros and in front of one of the two places in Akrotiri where tourists stop to make a great caldera's foto right opposite to Oia. Also hotel has a very good pool with comfort sunbeds. Definetly you will feel better here if you rent a car because center of Akrotiri, beaches, supermarkets and good tavernas are far from the hotel, it in the walking distpances only for the young adults.
Comparing five hotels we stayed in during our greek trip (3 of them on Santorini) Caldera Romantica was "best price/quality" hotel.

Room Tip: Don't get there by bus, ask for transfer

“Great value for money find in a less touristy part of Santorini”

Originally intending to have a short break on a Greek island with my mother, we booked most of the things fairly last minute in the run up to the actual flight, and mainly picked this hotel on the basis of the attractive prices. We needn't have worried about having to compromise on quality too though. From the moment we arrived we were charmed and impressed by this lovely family-run establishment. The staff were friendly and helpful to us, and we could hardly believe our eyes when we saw what a lovely spacious balcony we had with our room, over looking the caldera. We had great views every day, and it certainly showed that you do not need to shell out on a "unique view" of the sun set, as you can get great views from almost anywhere at this compact island.
You will definitely need some form of transport to go to and from the hotel; having said that, almost everyone visiting the island rents either a scooter, quad-bike or a car to get around the island anyway, so I wouldn't recommend the island to you at all if you are not prepared to do this. If you are travelling by these means, it is important to know that the road to the hotel turns off to the right before you get to Akrotiri village centre (follow the signs to Pharos, the charming lighthouse at the SW tip of the island). Akrotiri itself is a great place to stay, as you will not find the pomposity of Oia, or the crowds of Fira. There are a number of great places to eat there, and on several occasions we left the restaurant very sated from a hearty local meal for roughly €25 (for 2 people).
With regards to the English of the staff, we did not find this to be a major obstacle - the young lady who tends the reception has a perfectly good understanding of English and is friendly and inquisitive. On more than one occasion she gave us great tips on what to do round the island or which trips to go on, all of which we enjoyed immensely. The older members of the family have less English, but they have enough of the basics to get by. In any case, English people made up only a small proportion of the customers, as there were many French, Italian, Russian and Bulgarian visitors there during our stay. It is true the breakfast is rather small, but then the Greeks view it as the least important meal of the day, and barely have more than a coffee themselves.
In short, this is the hotel for you if you don't want to stay in the cramped cliff-top hotels of the island's larger tourist centres, such as Fira or Oia. I could not recommend this place any more for those wanting a more genuine Greek experience and brilliant value for money.

“Peaceful, laid back and spotlessly clean.”

Spent a lovely week at this distinctive family run hotel with my husband and teenage daughter - it suited us very well. There is an amazing view over the caldera. Worth mentioning that, of the staff/family, only the lady who manages the hotel has any English. We did not find this a problem - she seems very well connected and was able to help us with any queries or requests we had.

It's best to take a taxi here from the airport, and you will definitely need a car to get around. Car hire was efficiently arranged with a firm in the village (the rep came to the hotel) and we were returned to the airport at the end of the holiday as part of the deal. We did B&B, and breakfast is fairly basic, but that's not why you stay here. The situation is magic, the hotel and pool are attractive, lovingly maintained and spotlessly clean. The atmosphere is friendly and laid back. You have perfect peace to enjoy the sun, the sunset and that amazing scenery. What could be better?

Room Tip: Ask if you particularly want a Caldera view.
