“Stayed in 2006, then 2009 , and wil lbe back again in 2011, I rest my case.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

In 2003 I wandered into the foyer of The Hotel Asimina and met the proprietor, Pothitos Mendrinos. After showing me through his great little family owned hotel, I nominated the room I would like next time I hoped to be in Santorini.I have had that room in 2006 and 2009 and I know that with enough forward notice I will have it again in 2011.
Pothitos, the hands on owner, Phil the Greek Australian Pom, the Egyptian Greek ladykiller, and the rest of this great staff go out of their way to ensure you want to come back to them again.I go back in 2011 feeling like extended family.
I find the rooms to be meticulously clean, location is superb, watch the donkeys finish their trip up the 1000 steps from the harbour, about 1 or 2 minutes walk and you are looking out over the Caldera and you are right at the start of shopping and restaurants.
Although it is hard to find better modestly priced food than the hotel cafe/restaurant.
Most of us like to experiment with dining when we are on holidays but believe me it is hard to walk away from the Hotel Asimina kitchen.
Janet and I had friends with us in 2006 and my sister in 2009. Everybody left looking forward to returning someday. With luck and good health I will continue to do so.
This is not a five star hotel but the help and hospitality you receive from the Hotel Asimina team eclipses many of the up market accommodation at which we have stayed.
Do yourself a favour.Stay with them.

“Ideally situated in the centre of Thira”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2006

We arrived as backpackers and had been advised to find a hotel near the top of the cable-car in the main town, Thira. This hotel couldn't have been nearer, possibly part of the same building.
Bedrooms situated above restaurant and info. office; bang in the centre of town. Bus station only a short walk away. Very comfortable beds, nice linen, TV/fridge/Ac. Good ensuite facilities, in fact the first bathroom we had in Greece that had a shower-curtain to contain the splashes. All this for a reasonable price.
No views except other roof-tops. We were afraid the church clock bell would keep us awake but they muted it 9pm-9am.
We were under the misapprehension that we would ride up the cable-car from the ferry. In fact the cable-car comes from the old port which is now only used by local boat trips and cruise liners.
The new ferry port is 3miles along and 1,000ft down vertical. Buses and taxis meet the ferry services. A hair raising ride but cheap (by local bus).
Views of the circular sea filled caldera most spectacular. Towns all painted white, perched atop 1,000ft cliffs. Jumble of narrow shop lined streets ready for the tourists.

  • Liked — Good standard for the price
  • Disliked — No view, and it is a spectacular place.
  • Tips/Secrets — Santorini is the most spectacular place in the world but over-saturated with tourists
