“Excellent place to stay in Mykonos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

We stayed at the Geranium in September 2011 and had an amazing time! The resort is gorgeous with an amazing pool. The rooms (we stayed in two of the apartments) were large, comfortable and well-appointed. The best aspect of the Geranium, though, is the staff. Davide met us at the airport for the quick trip to the resort and Michael and Marco kept us entertained and well-served at the resort bar. I was my boyfriend and a group of friends and we all agreed we wouldn't stay anywhere else the next time we go. The resort is just a few meters up the hill from the Elysium. Almost nothing at all to complain about - our double bed was two twins pushed together, but that's so typical in Europe it's hardly worth mentioning. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: The apartments are a great value if you have a small group.

“Overall pretty good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

Basically everything that has been written in other reviews of this hotel reflect my thoughts.

First, the good... the staff are delightful. Pick up from the airport was friendly and spacious 8 seater was more than adequate. I was immediately shown to my room, given a tour of the grounds, introduced to the bar staff and offered a drink. The staff were friendly and down to earth throughout my stay. The pool area is delightful. Towels are laid out on the sun loungers every morning ready for guests and the pool itself is a good size. Snacks and drinks available all day from the pool bar were fresh and tasty as was breakfast taken by the pool.

So what are the downsides? First the rooms. I was first shown a very compact room which was the room I actually had booked. I was told 'it is small but of course you don't want to spend your holiday in the room'. Luckily a larger room was available and I was offered it at no extra price so was happier. I am sure this wouldn't have been the case had I been there a few weeks earlier, in August. But even the larger room was higgledy-piggledy. Furniture just didnt fit the room in places. In addition the bathrooms were wetrooms which is fine, but it never drained. So the bathroom ended up like a lake - so once you had a shower you couldnt go back in the bathroom until the cleaner had been in with a mop. The toilet roll holder was in the shower which meant the toilet roll got saturated at every shower. It did make me wonder who designed the place??

The other negative is the location. Its high up on the hill - so quite an ordeal late at night when its still hot and you've had a few drinks. I am 40 and go to the gym 5 times a week but I was getting fed up with that walk home after a few days. Also be warned that the hotel is on the wrong side of the Ring Road so you have to cross it to go into town by foot. Lots of fast maniac drivers so be careful. Its easier to cross if you leave out of the main gate rather than the small side one.

Geranium was exclusively gay while I was there and although other guests were polite there was no organised events for all guests.

Overall I was happy enough with Geranium. Mykonos is so popular nowadays that hoteliers can get away with charging high prices and get away with it so I cannot really complain about the price - though its not cheap!

Room Tip: Just try and avoid the smal rooms and apparently those on the first floor have good views.

“Very good,... if you're not in the 'bad rooms'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

Location is very good (up hill, 5 min downhill walk from Elysium Hotel (place to be for sunset cocktail) and 15 min downhill walk from city): nice view on the bay, alongside a busy road (but noise was not that bad) and opposite the only Starbucks on the island. Renting a motorbike is a very good idea (to get around the island to the beaches and to make your way back uphill at night): 15€/day.
Reception area and pool side were super! Large, well maintained swimming pool, nice music, pool bar, plenty of places to enjoy all angles of the sun-day.
Staff was extremely friendly and we experienced a very personal touch.
Only downside: in contrast to the expectations from the website 'spacious rooms with sea view', we got a very small room with a small and short bed and a tiny bathroom where you needed to stand in the shower to brush your teeth. Only a small window with non transparent glass (so no view at all). Luckily we got an upgrade for half of our nights. Bottom line: highly recommendable hotel but do ask for a BIG room (first floor) with a kingsize bed.

Room Tip: beware of the small rooms on the ground level!

“I was amazed”

I found out about this hotel online while I was taking a two week trip threw Europe! I can't discribe how amazing this hotel is...the rooms were very welcoming and the staff were the nicest people! They made me feel like I was a friend, not a guest! I can't wait to go back next year! The ocean view from the hotel and sunset was breath taking! Another plus is that it is right across the street from the ONLY Starbucks on the island!

“Geranium - bit of a let down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

The Geranium Residence now goes by the name Geranium Hotel. It definitely has some good points but prospective guests need to beware of some issues. As for the PROS:
1. It is close to the Elysium Hotel - really the only bona fide gay hotel on the island,
2.the staff is very helpful and makes extra efforts to make your stay enjoyable as possible,
3.it is clean, our kitchen was good size and well equipped as were our bedrooms.
4. The a/c worked well and the whole place was fairly quiet once you closed your windows and doors. The grocery store and fruit market are very close, about a three or four minute walk - once you get across the street (more on that later).
5. The pool is large, clean and quite deep as pools go - appx 9 feet I think.
CONS:
1. Each and every window and door in the rooms/apartments has had its windows frosted. The only way that you can see out of your room is to open the windows and or doors. This lets out the A/C and in come the flies as there are no screens. You are also directed to not leave the windows open as it is not safe to do so in that area.
2. The "clothing optional" pool seems private enough as there is a wall in front of the hotel with no sidewalk or even space to walk on that side of the road -HOWEVER- when the buses roll by they have a very clear and unobstructed view of most of the pool deck.
3. It is important to realize that the clientele at the hotel is not all gay and there will be plenty of women and opposite sex couples staying there - if you are looking for any kind of gay scene - you need to leave the property for that stuff.
4. As others have noted, the bathrooms are unimaginably small - with pedestal sinks - meaning NO storage or counter space for much of anything beyond a toothbrush and comb. Our bathrooms also had the toilet paper holder mounted IN the shower - yes REALLY they did! And they don't function well with water getting and pooling all over the floor . All they need to do is get longer shower curtains or drop the rods and the floor drains are not in the right place either.
5. The road that the hotel and pool area fronts onto is EXTREMELY BUSY, NOISY, & on a CURVING HILL with very little sight distance and drivers tend to race around that curve so you will have quite a harrowing time trying to get across on foot EVEN IF you are very agile and fit. There is NO SIDEWALK on either side of the road so if you want to walk into town then you will be walking through trash strewn scrub.
6. The trash problem on the Island really should be addressed by the entire community. Trash is being collected in dumpsters which do not have enough capacity for the people who use them. The lids do not close automatically so people leave them open. In July when we were there, the wind blew 24 hrs a day each day about 25steady with 40 mph gusts and so with the dumpsters being overloaded and the lids open, the island was essentially a massive trash dump with trash flying everywhere. We were told that the wind was typical for that time of year and that it actually gets worse.
Overall I would say you could still have a good time here if you are prepared with a rental car and have no expectations of a private gay men's hotel. For the money and the effort involved, we will not return to Mykonos and anyone determined to visit should prepare themselves for these issues.
