The Pearl Beach Hotel is very well positioned on the beach outside Rethymnon which is walking distance or a short bus ride away. The grounds are pretty if a little bitty but that may be due to the fact that there are two hotels a 4* Pearl Beach and a 5* Aegean Pearl in the same compound, although the more pressing reason could be that it took over a neighbouring hotel. As a result the room we initially got was unrefurbished and not brought in line with the rest of the hotel, of very poor standard, small, cramped with a bathroom that was very poorly fitted out ( the bath tub in which you were also expected to shower was a little dangerous as it was very small and had a step in it...easy to trip over).
The food was good and the rooms clean, and the new room we were moved to for the last two days, an improvement.
Rethymnon is a lovely place to stay in, whether you choose to stay put and explore locally or whether you catch the bus into town or hire a car and explore the rest of the island, all of which we did. If there is one trip you should not miss it is Arkadi, Margarites Eleftherna. Margarites is a wonderful village ( specialises in pottery) and has tavernas with excellent food and a gorgeous view. Eleftherna is a gem of an archaeological site and you will be glad if you decide to explore it.
Other Excursions : Of course Knossos, Phaistos etc worth seeing. Chania, most charming little town, even the harbour reataurants were good value.
