“surprising amenities at a budget rate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2010

In the heart of the old city. a couple of blocks from the waterfront, yet with its own chained-off parking area just up the block, this hotel is full of pleasant surprises. When we first entered our room, it seemed datk and blah -- that is, until we opened the shutters to our balcony overlooking a lovely pool, which is elegantly set among plantings and the centuries-old surrounding buildings. (We'd definitely recommend asking for a room that faces the pool rather than the street.) For such a reasonable hotel (we paid 74 euros in Early June, reserving directly from the hotel, buffet breakfast and taxes included), the public spaces are surpisingly commodious. We enjoyed the lounge area with large screen TV for the World Cup games, and the table tennis available near the pool.

“OMG- room with parking in Rethymnon old town!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2010

A parking spot in the old town - now this is worth getting the room for if you have a car. the hotel does not really have any local character, but if you have a car then this is the place for you. The rooms are dark as everyone keeps saying, but its becuase of the choice of dark marble floors not the usual white floor. There are ample windows and shutters - open the shutters to let in the light - but if the sun is hot you need to keep them closed. the room for 3 persons is quite spacious, the rooms for 2 are a little cramped. my only disagreement with the room is there is no fridge to put in your cold water!

The hotel staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable and were very helpful with various issues we had.

The breakfast included in the rate is unexpected and great considering the cheap price of the room. Normally you would pay the same and not get any breakfast.

One issue - good location but there is a bit of noise from people attending the nightclubs nearby - bring earplugs for Sat nights.

i would go again

“Charming hotel with good service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2009

The service at Fortezza Hotel was very good. The staff tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible at any time. They even transported our luggage from the main road to the hotel.

The room was average. A bit dark, but clean and nice. Once we got the aircondition on it became the perfect hideaway from the warm weather outside. We had access to the swimming pool from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening, it was a bit small - but ok.

Location of the hotel was not very far from the main road, and it was within walking distance to the beach and shopping streets. If you do not want to walk around, you can stay at the hotel, where you will find everything you need (restaurant, bar, swimming pool, table tennis...)

The breakfast was good, and offered different types of bread. Even more Scandinavian types (not only white bread).

What I liked most with this hotel was the incredible service and access to the swimming pool with sun beds free of charge. What i liked least was noise from other rooms and the street outside.

“Ok, but nothing more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2008

My friend and I stayed here for a week in July 2007 during a heat wave. The reason the heat wave became a problem was the 20 minute walk to the beach. I do not reccomend this hotel in the middle of summer if you like a short walk to the beach.

The hotel itself was ok. The people at reception was very nice and helpful and I have no complaints on the service. The breakfast wasn't much, very small selection of bread, but it was ok. The breakfast room was nice and the waitresses very service-minded and quick.
The pool area was small and the sun-beds were quickly filled in the morning, but we spent very little time there so it wasn't really a problem.

Our room was very small and the terrace could barely fit two chairs and a table. Our room overlooked a street but we had no trouble with noise from the outside. The noise we experienced originated from within the hotel. The walls were thin and we heard people walking by in the hall outside. The bathroom was not completely cleaned and it was old and in desperate need for an update. I know this hotel is cheap, but still....I don't think I'd stay here again.

The location of the hotel is charming, right in the middle of the old town and below the Fortezza. Lot's a small restaurants around and it felt quite safe. Too bad it's so far from the beach. When we booked our stay it read that the hotel was 500 metres from the beach, and that's just not true. Granted the hotel might be 500 metres from the sea, but unless you want to sun-bathe on a rock you need to walk at least 2000 metres more - to get to a beach with sun beds.
