We have just returned from our holiday in Eden Rock - also goes under the name Eden Village so be weary!!! It is a good 3.5 hour jounery from the Heraklion airport - (i guess because of all the stops the bus makes before arriving at Eden Rock/village. The toilet in the bus was not working.... so you had to hop off the bus to the hotels along the route when the bus stops to drop off someone. On arriving at the hotel, the room was terribly hot and did not have air conditioning - although the travel agent had said that all rooms in this hotel have air conditioning. We had to pay an extra 10EUR PER DAY to have air conditioning. Air conditioning in all rooms will apparently commence from 15th July as the manager told us.
The rooms are in bad condition. There was an awful smell in our bathroom each day. There are holes /deep cracks in in the concrete/tiles in the bathroom where the blumping pipes go through.. and I suppose from these holes, the cockroaches get access to the rooms. One day, Our kids had a bath and the water drained into the bathroom floor!! other goey waste that had been trapped in the drainage also came floating! we then had to spend about 20 minutes letting the water drain very slowly by opening and closing the plug! There was black mold around the bath. The tap had green stuff that had hardened on it.
On the childrens pool, there was always a green line on it.. one day it was so dirty one of the parents asked for it to be cleaned again. The white wall next to the kids pool also had black mold all along.. and weeds. The pool garden is just not well tended. The grass seemed a bit long.
Breakfast was the same each day - nothing amazing. Dinners were varied and quite nice.
The Agia fotia beach is about 1 km walk from the hotel. Going back to the hotel is an uphill trek in the scortching temperatures.. and the beach has pebbles - large one. There is not much going on in this area. You have to catch a bus to Ierapetra or Makry gialos to experience a good sea side vibe. We rented a car and it was the best thing we could do. We took drives to the sea side in the early evenings after dinner with our kids and were able to experience the sea side vibe and have coffee and light snacks whilst listening to the sea.
On the other hand, staff were very friendly and quite helpful. We talked to the manager regarding the misinformations we had and it seems we were not the only ones.
Unfortunately, after reading other reviews on Eden Rock, from 6 years ago, it seems that nothing has been done to rectify the smelly rooms, the insects, mold and the hygiene.
In conclusion we think that ALLTours (the agent) tries to advertise this hotel as nicer than it really is and we got confused by the two different names.. Agents advertise it as Eden Village but hotel is called Eden Rock. Our initial shock and disappointment came because we expected it to be nice and clean.
The view from the hotel is nice though.
