“Very poor hygiene, Mold, cockroaches in the room, false advertising”

We have just returned from our holiday in Eden Rock - also goes under the name Eden Village so be weary!!! It is a good 3.5 hour jounery from the Heraklion airport - (i guess because of all the stops the bus makes before arriving at Eden Rock/village. The toilet in the bus was not working.... so you had to hop off the bus to the hotels along the route when the bus stops to drop off someone. On arriving at the hotel, the room was terribly hot and did not have air conditioning - although the travel agent had said that all rooms in this hotel have air conditioning. We had to pay an extra 10EUR PER DAY to have air conditioning. Air conditioning in all rooms will apparently commence from 15th July as the manager told us.

The rooms are in bad condition. There was an awful smell in our bathroom each day. There are holes /deep cracks in in the concrete/tiles in the bathroom where the blumping pipes go through.. and I suppose from these holes, the cockroaches get access to the rooms. One day, Our kids had a bath and the water drained into the bathroom floor!! other goey waste that had been trapped in the drainage also came floating! we then had to spend about 20 minutes letting the water drain very slowly by opening and closing the plug! There was black mold around the bath. The tap had green stuff that had hardened on it.

On the childrens pool, there was always a green line on it.. one day it was so dirty one of the parents asked for it to be cleaned again. The white wall next to the kids pool also had black mold all along.. and weeds. The pool garden is just not well tended. The grass seemed a bit long.

Breakfast was the same each day - nothing amazing. Dinners were varied and quite nice.

The Agia fotia beach is about 1 km walk from the hotel. Going back to the hotel is an uphill trek in the scortching temperatures.. and the beach has pebbles - large one. There is not much going on in this area. You have to catch a bus to Ierapetra or Makry gialos to experience a good sea side vibe. We rented a car and it was the best thing we could do. We took drives to the sea side in the early evenings after dinner with our kids and were able to experience the sea side vibe and have coffee and light snacks whilst listening to the sea.

On the other hand, staff were very friendly and quite helpful. We talked to the manager regarding the misinformations we had and it seems we were not the only ones.

Unfortunately, after reading other reviews on Eden Rock, from 6 years ago, it seems that nothing has been done to rectify the smelly rooms, the insects, mold and the hygiene.

In conclusion we think that ALLTours (the agent) tries to advertise this hotel as nicer than it really is and we got confused by the two different names.. Agents advertise it as Eden Village but hotel is called Eden Rock. Our initial shock and disappointment came because we expected it to be nice and clean.

The view from the hotel is nice though.

“Traumhafte Gegend und liebenswertes Hotelierpaar”

Easter 2011 we made holidays in EDEN ROCK hotel in Aghia Fotia, in the near of Ieropetra in Crete. With the experience of living in this hotel for 10 days there are many reasons for us to make advertising for it.
The rooms are in greek style, simple and clean, with a brilliant view to the sea and the mountains. The greek food tasted very fine and Andreas and Maro, the owner of Eden Rock, are very friendly and try to fulfill all wishes of their guests.
The nature at this place is fabulous and people who like to walk find many and wonderful possibilities there. We like to remember our holidays in Eden Rock.

“To quote Dickens "It was the best of times/ It was the worst of times"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

Having read previous Trip Advisor reviews we had low expectations. The hotel was indeed fairly 'basic' and in need of modernisation it felt a little 'tired' . The only other guests were German/Swiss/Austrian. I knew from the outset that it wasn't five star, so I didn't expect it. Our trip was 'made' by the manager and his wife who went out of their way to help us, advise us and engage with us. "The worst of times refers to the problems we had with the holiday company and our transfer to airports - the manager (Andreas) sorted that out, brilliantly!

As a place to sleep, and re-fuel and as a base for the wonderful, non-touristy beaches around it was perfect. I cannot praise the courtesy of the staff highly enough. If a major updating/upgrading were undertaken it would be what the management deserves.

The food was plentiful but not particularly varied and perhaps a better balance between European and traditional Cretan food would have helped - but at least they made the effort. If the facilities and were updated and upgraded (but the management remained the same) I would return very soon.

“Eden Rock Hotel - Not recommended”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2008

Structure, furniture and bathroom have been probably never renewed. The Hotel is dirty and the cleanliness wouldn't pass any serious sanitary check: from the breakfast area to the swimming pool. I have also some doubt about safety measure. The owner has a big dirty old dog which wander about all the hotel. I wouldn't suggest this hotel to anyone!

“A disgrace!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2008

I have to concur with all previous reviews, this hotel should be struck from any list as a viable all inclusive hotel option. The manager is a far cry from any customer service professional and should be dismissed from the establishment altogether. Whilst the location isn't all bad if you're wanting to get away from it all, the way in which the hotel operates ruins the entire experience. My fiancee and I went there on our engagement holiday, opting for the all inclusive and hoping for a realxing break - nowhere near! All inclusive there means a very different thing to what you may already be accustomed to - time and variety limitations!! Food was same every day and not good at all. Swimming pool would not pass a health inspection - especially with the fact that the hotel family's dogs are able to roam freely about the complex, leaving little reminders of their presence as they go! Seeing the puppy in the pool was a big no and when Andreas, the manager, was queried about this, his usual bellowing of, 'I want you out of my hotel!' was an idle glimmer of hope of actually escaping the place. He was rude, impatient and almost had my fiancee and another woman (who was on her honeymoon there after being relocated from a double booking!) in tears. He was very close to physical confrontation with several of the guests on many occassion - it's just a dire place. Ierepetra on the other hand, became a welcome escape from the confines of the Eden Rock. However, the point of going all inclusive means you should not have to leave the complex at all. Incurring cost of taxi fare and meals out was a necessity for simply trying to salvage some enjoyment from the holiday - the Eden Rock is certainly no Eden at all. The manager should be disgusted with himself and consider another line of work, perhaps being a drill instructor or dog trainer! Avoid this place - it is a huge disappointment.
