We visited Greece in April 2006. Our holiday ended with 3 nights in Crete at Villa Creta.
They have 2 villas and we chose the smaller one, Villa Despoina, on top of a hill overlooking a valley. The view was beautiful, you can see sunrise from the balcony and sunset from your own private garden. The villa's pool was huge. It was so relaxing and peaceful. Much better than booking a standard room in a huge hotel complex and more or less the same price you would pay for 5 star accommodation. To us this was 7 star. We could self-cater or have good homecooked greek food prepared by Stella. Her mousaka was delicious. We hired a car (which we were nervous about) but thanks to Alexandros's very clear directions we were able to see Knossos (only 30 mins away) and the museum and Venetian Fort in Heraklion without entering the city centre. The day trip to Phaestos was enjoyable and easy driving. We were sorry we couldn't spend longer there. We even got to met their farm animals and we were given fresh free range eggs in our fridge upon arrival. The people are really friendly, not your regular rip-off the tourist kind of people. If you like self-catering, want your own villa and swimming pool, like complete privacy, and wish to try your hand at driving in Greece, Villa Creta is highly recommended. We had a wonderful holiday and were truly sorry to leave.
