“Tired, basic and threadbare but location exellent and staff good.”

This hotel is on the main road, right beside the harbour and there are countless eateries around. Exellent location as the hotel leads out onto the main square in Elounda. Trip boats leave the harbour for Spinalonga Island every 10 minutes or so. Opposite the hotel is a very good Inernet Cafe (as the hotel has NO facilities).
The hotel harks back to the 60's or 70's and decor is very dated. There is no parking anywhere around so if you wish to hire a car, make sure the hirer has their own car park as parking in the harbour/village square beside the hotel is about 6-8 euros per 6 hours. Rooms are very clean, however they are tiny. We had to tie up the shower curtain everytime we went to the 'loo' as the two were on top of each other. Two people could not get in the bathroom together. Our room had 2 electric sockets of which one was for a fridge. The other socket did not work. other guests said they just had one. A very few rooms overlook the seafront, most either face inwards towards a courtyard or overlook the main road into town. On lower floors, these rooms can stink of exhaust fumes on hotter days from the countless trip buses and motor bikes. We were on bread and breakfast basis but only went down 2 days and then gave it a miss as it was very basic- lukewarm tea and coffee, bread, ham, cheese, jam and horrible cheap cornflakes. The dining room is right beside the reception desk. There is no lounge. For evening meals there is a restaurant underneath and to the seaward side of the hotel but we gave it a miss (if you go half-board you will get served in the dining room and NOT in the restaurant). Don't get me wrong - the staff are always busy cleaning, the people in the hotel are lovely and do their best but this place would struggle to be 2 star. I went there in the 1980's and it was much better. This is because this current building has been 2 older hotels combined and I stayed in what was the better one of the 'now' two. We only paid £180 for 2 of us for a week so we can't complain too much. It was cheap, very clean with air-con so fitted our lifestyle. It's fine if you pay very little and want to be in the town centre......Don't go if you want plush dining rooms, good balconies to sit out on, lounges, swimming pools, bars, internet and entertainment cos there aint none! The only facility I saw for kids was a cot left out on a landing !

“basic but good”

We arrived at 11.30 at night, which was no problem at all, We got a seaview room a fridge and water what more do you want. Yes the room was basic but it was clean good hot shower clean towels everyother day and a basic breakfast all for 21 euros a night. I had read all the other reviews and I think you have to take some of them with a pinch of salt we never had any of the problems others have had so would recommend it to any one old or young,

“Great location but pretty basic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

Agree with most of the other comments made previously but thankfully we did not have to put up with any "stench". We were put into a noisy roadside room at 1am after a tiring 2 hour transfer from the airport but asked to change next morning and moved into inside room which faced opposite wall which was considerably quieter. Request for sea-view declined as we were told all rooms were booked well in advance but then heard sea-view rooms were being advertised. Had breakfast only on one occasion and thought it was terrible choice. Found reception unhelpful and not very welcoming. Room cleaned everyday but just a basic tidy up. Towels were like sandpaper. Shower slowed to a trickle most nights or stopped altogether and water lukewarm. This hotel could be great if it just got it's act together as location -wise it was ideal for other restaurants & bars.

“Elounda is fantastic, this is our third trip there.”

If you are looking for a up market hotel dont bother, the aristea is clean and basic, wonderful views over the sea and mountains. we found the staff very friendly and helpful.
I do think they could improve the breakfast, very mundane, and no choice. also the shower needs updating, hardly any pressure and water luke warm, luckily it was hot out there.
also the restaurant ajoining was not up to standard, and was empty most evenings.
the room was cleaned daily great,

the hotel is in desperate need of a facelift.

“Give this one a miss, old and tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2009

First impressions on arrival was not the same as on the photo, which was obviously very out of date. Tired entrance and old wired switchboard in reception didn't inspire confidence even though now disconnected. Arrived at 1.00 a.m. given a key and left to make our own way to our room. The room was not harbour side but road side and was obviously going to be noisy. Also there was an illuminated hotel sign right outside our room, which didn't go off till about 2.00 a.m.

The bathroom door did not shut, the shower curtain was an antiquated affair on some sort of coathanger contraption which served no purpose whatsoever. The shower itself was useless; only a trickle of water and it was never warm. We requested a room change in the morning, before giving our reasons the owner immediately said "Too noisy." She had nothing else available for 2 days and then only a ground floor inner room. On viewing it was no better so we stuck it out where we were. However, within days there was a sign on the front window advertising rooms with harbour side views, so obviously we weren't going to get one.

Obviously a sewerwage problem in the bathroom as only backed up sewerage could cause this level of stench permeating the tiny bathroom; some days it smelt of pure ammonia. Although the room was cleaned every day, it was merely a wiping over of the floor, the sink was never cleaned the whole week. Had it not been for the air conditioning sleep would have been impossible as there was no way we could have slept with the high volume of traffic noise if the door had been open.

Breakfast was paltry, nothing like the previous Greek breakfasts we have experienced. The bread was sometimes hard, cheese and ham were cheap processed, juice was squash not fresh, cake only occasional. Cheap cereal and no fruit or yogurt which Greece is so famous for. The only good thing was the coffee.

If you are forced to stay here cheer yourself up by reading the visitor's book on display at reception, dating from the early 70s. The comments are hilarious and obviously not understood by the owners or they would have been torn out as one recently had been.

We are frequent and experienced travellers and although we accept standards are not always high this has to be the worst we have ever come across.
