This was not our first visit to the Portabello apartments. Yannis, Eleni and Mary made us very welcome and Maria is lovely too, but the 'jewel in the Corali/Portabello crown' is undoubtedly Myra who ensures the whole place runs very efficiently and she's a lovely lady too.
During this visit, we noticed that absolutely nothing had been done in the past three years to either maintain or improve the apartments in Portabello which was somewhat disappointing - for instance worn out varnish on the doors wouldn't take more than a few minutes to put right; properly emulsioned walls would look so much better; hooks, mirrors, pictures, etc would all look so much nicer if they had enough screws in them and were hung straight and secure. However, the biggest let-down is that one of the cleaners had left and not been replaced meaning that the cleaning is done at a minimum - our apartment was not cleaned once in two weeks stay and the dust under the beds had obviously been there much, much longer than that! All that was done during our stay was bins emptied every day (great) and linens only changed once in 2 weeks (not so great, we had to ask for clean towels). We don't know what the Corali studios were like inside but got the impression that as these had been bought by the family first, they possibly got the care and attention that the whole lot should receive.
There was a wedding party staying for a week during our stay and other guests were then made to feel rather unwelcome, shut out of a bbq and the bar completely one night, yet the wedding guests did not show any real signs of friendliness or happiness during their stay either. Something is wrong here and we spent a lot of our time inspecting other apartments for future visits to Elounda, as did other guests apparently.
Added to all this was the problem of the dozens of coaches that park opposite daily for their passengers to take the boat trips to Spinalonga and their bbq, during which time coach engines are left running for the drivers to enjoy the air-conditioning while they waited .... which meant that engine fumes drifted across both the beach and the Corali/Portabello complex - even the apartment owners can see no end to this.
Sorry, but we won't be staying at these apartments again, they're okay but ..................
