We stayed at Alikes for 1 week from 13 Oct. First the negative points. We didn't have a rep in the coach from the airport to welcome us to Crete etc & were put in a taxi to Alikes from previous stop. I think we were unlucky with the room (102) which was large with good bathroom (shower, not bath) but 'kitchen' area tiny - kettle flex trailed from wall socket across back of sink to back of hob. Lack of storage space - a shelf on the wall would rectify this. We didn't really have a view because in front of our patio area was a hedge for privacy so, as I'm short, I couldn't see a view. At night noise from bar very noticeable.
There isn't an indoor reception area, just the outside bar - nice in good weather but we had a couple of days terrible weather (torrential rain/cold) so nowhere to sit & chat. They could make a ground floor room into a lounge area for bad weather use. The pool has no room around it for sun loungers, which are on the lawn outside rooms 101-104.
Cost of safe 15 Euros (we locked valuables in our cases instead) & aircon 50 Euros a week (not needed mid-Oct).
Good points: Maria, Poppy, Jenny! Very helpful. When our metal shutter broke (in down position) it was repaired on the 1st working day.
The apartments are on the waterfront with lovely views over the bay, but you can't swim from there. There's a small beach a few minutes to the right (empty and the sunchairs and umbrellas were removed while we were lying there!) and the large town beach about 10 mins to the left. They are pebbly, not sandy. Water very cold mid-Oct. Cost of loungers/umbrellas 7 Euros but only once asked to pay.
Resort very quiet with some places closed or few customers. Fantastic tavernas in stretch between Alikes and Elounda town, most built out onto water. Best is Katafigio (reasonably priced/friendly owner). Also enjoyed the Ferryman (used in 'Who Pays the Ferryman', 1970s series), Olinda, Ergospasio. In town, one evening 'Babel' had disco music rather than the ubiquitous football.
Take a boat from Elounda to Spinalonga (only 10 Euros return). No need for the expensive excursion! If you've read 'The Island' it's unmissable. The boat back goes round the island with commentary.
Went on Happy Train through Plaka into hills. Nice trip with commentary.
Had a rental car 3 days. One day went to Aghios Nikalaos in the rain, next day to Knossos (well worth the journey) & 3rd day along north-east coast.
Plaka is a lovely village with good tavernas. Will appear (together with Spinalonga) in 'The Island' in 26-part series. In the village above Elounda you can see the film-set where scenes were filmed - the white/blue buildings have been covered in brown plasterboard to look like the Spinalonga buildings.
So - good in good weather, in bad weather not!
