We stayed at Alikes for 1 week from 13 Oct. First the negative points. We didn't have a rep in the coach from the airport to welcome us to Crete etc & were put in a taxi to Alikes from previous stop. I think we were unlucky with the room (102) which was large with good bathroom (shower, not bath) but 'kitchen' area tiny - kettle flex trailed from wall socket across back of sink to back of hob. Lack of storage space - a shelf on the wall would rectify this. We didn't really have a view because in front of our patio area was a hedge for privacy so, as I'm short, I couldn't see a view. At night noise from bar very noticeable.
There isn't an indoor reception area, just the outside bar - nice in good weather but we had a couple of days terrible weather (torrential rain/cold) so nowhere to sit & chat. They could make a ground floor room into a lounge area for bad weather use. The pool has no room around it for sun loungers, which are on the lawn outside rooms 101-104.
Cost of safe 15 Euros (we locked valuables in our cases instead) & aircon 50 Euros a week (not needed mid-Oct).

Good points: Maria, Poppy, Jenny! Very helpful. When our metal shutter broke (in down position) it was repaired on the 1st working day.
The apartments are on the waterfront with lovely views over the bay, but you can't swim from there. There's a small beach a few minutes to the right (empty and the sunchairs and umbrellas were removed while we were lying there!) and the large town beach about 10 mins to the left. They are pebbly, not sandy. Water very cold mid-Oct. Cost of loungers/umbrellas 7 Euros but only once asked to pay.

Resort very quiet with some places closed or few customers. Fantastic tavernas in stretch between Alikes and Elounda town, most built out onto water. Best is Katafigio (reasonably priced/friendly owner). Also enjoyed the Ferryman (used in 'Who Pays the Ferryman', 1970s series), Olinda, Ergospasio. In town, one evening 'Babel' had disco music rather than the ubiquitous football.

Take a boat from Elounda to Spinalonga (only 10 Euros return). No need for the expensive excursion! If you've read 'The Island' it's unmissable. The boat back goes round the island with commentary.
Went on Happy Train through Plaka into hills. Nice trip with commentary.
Had a rental car 3 days. One day went to Aghios Nikalaos in the rain, next day to Knossos (well worth the journey) & 3rd day along north-east coast.
Plaka is a lovely village with good tavernas. Will appear (together with Spinalonga) in 'The Island' in 26-part series. In the village above Elounda you can see the film-set where scenes were filmed - the white/blue buildings have been covered in brown plasterboard to look like the Spinalonga buildings.
So - good in good weather, in bad weather not!

“Wonderful holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

We returned from 2 weeks in the alikes apartments on 13 October - I'm still in Cretan mood! The apartments were lovely - our room a bit dark but it made it cool. We were in room 103 and it was very spacious and clean. Beds and towels changed twice weekly. Cooking facilites were sparse, just 2 rings and a toaster, but we were on holiday - who wants to cook when there are so many wonderful restaurants nearby! We woke every morning to see accross the Med to Spinalonga - wonderful.
Elounda was a beautiful place so many good restaurants and cafes to choose from. Mr George's Kalypso and Zorba's are good eateries as are Mam's just on the main road at the top of the slip road, also Mellissos was good too - and just across the road on the pier into the sea, but all the restaurants on the walk along the sea frot to the harbour are full of good places to eat.
Spinalonga is a must see and it's better to have read Victoria Hislpo's 'the Island' before you go - it just gives an insight into the life of the lepers.
We went to Knossos on a Thomson's trip and it was very good - great guide.
Plaka is also a beautiful village just along the coast and is worth a visit, Also - take the happy train up to Vhouras and Selles. It was a great trip out. Agios Nic is also worth a visit or 2.
Very relaxing 2 weeks in beautiful surroundings with wonderful staff. Will be going back again next year - definately.
The staff were very helpful and spoke wonderful English.

Room Tip: Ground floor was fine - not much noise, but don't know what other rooms were like

“We seemed to get the short straw”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Travelled in June 2011 and had always wanted to stay in the Elounda area. Used trip advisor to select this place. Arrived in a power cut at night and were shown to our rooms and simply left. Disappointing start. No torch or real help provided. Mosquito net in room kept loudly springing open in wind and took until the end of the week before it was fixed.

Air conditioning did not work properly. Found out later that because the net on window was just tied on in a particular way it prevented air conditioning from functioning. Eventually had a repairman round but after several goes at attempting to fix it we gave up and were given back the 50 euros we had paid for the air conditioning. But we did need it and there were no spare rooms.Shower had to be held in your hand-not good. Cooking facilities were very basic-not even a saucepan. Fridge door kept opening up if cupboard alongside was opened. Balcony was small and faced the shrubbey and no view worth remembering. We talked to loads of others who had much better views and balconies.

Many of the other visitors were on return visits and had been able to book into the new block or the better rooms. So I would expect many good reviews but you might get a room which gets disturbed by the central bar area. Maybe if we did not have to open windows and the air conditiong worked the bar noise would not have beeen a problem..

The 3 key staff were brilliant, very helpful and friendly. The location of the place is excellent and the pool, seating area and sun bathing facilities are just right. Our sense of discontent may have ben influenced by the fact that those who booked early to stay before Thomsons took over were staying for half the price we paid and in much better accommodation.

Would consider staying here again but would definitely want assurance we were in the new block.

“Super friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We had a lovely week. Our room was in the new block and was very light and modern. The room was cleaned every day and was always left sparkling. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The resort was great with really super restaurants. We ate in quite a few on the walk into the centre and did not have a bad meal. We also really enjoyed the Greek Night at Mr George's restaurant. Alough our room only had a partial seaview, our room was only 1 flight of stairs from the roof terrace which was huge and had great views. We made good use of it and most days had it to ourselves. I would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Email ahead if you want a sea view or any particular room. They will do their best to accomodate yo...

“Excellent - windy!”

Just got back from Alykes in Elounda - very, very impressed with the apartments.

Room was very clean and a good size. Towels changed twice a week.

Didn't use the kitchenette much but seemed to have everything you'd need except maybe an oven.

Maria was a delight. Very helpful and knowledgeable. Because it was very quiet (final week of season) the bar didn't seem to be open after Maria went home at 5pm so this is my only minor gripe.

Room Tip: 110 was great for us.
