“Good Location, but not as advertised!”

This little hotel is wonderfully located close to the Venetian Harbour in Chania. Set in a pretty and quiet street, it is only a 2 min walk from the harbour and a 10 - 15min walk to the small beach. The staff are friendly and the rooms basic and clean.
However it is not as advertised on their website - they state parking as a facility - but none is available - when asked we were told 'oh just find a place on the street'. Our sea view balcony only had a sea view if you leaned out over another balcony and then it was between buildings. The room had no storage and the bathroom was just awful. Dark, damp - it had a constantly dripping shower unit, which was broken and could not be attached to the wall, and was tiny.
The hotel is well priced for its location and we could forgive the above if we did not have some difficulty on checking out of the hotel. We had booked online using an Amex card to secure the reservation. On Checking in we quiered the payment with the receptionist and she confitrmed she had the card details and would debit it on check out. As we went to breakfast on the morning of our departure, she asked us to pay in cash 'as the card readers were not working'. We told her we could not do that as we had no cash. By the time we returned from breakfast she told us she could now take visa, but not Amex as the machines were selectively broken for Amex. We offered to leave the Amex details to process when the machine was working correctly again, but was told 'it might not be fixed as they had already waited over a week for it to be fixed'. So if the machine was not working they knew this on checking in and failed to tell us!

“Great location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

Amazing location, in the heart of the old town, but also closer to the beach as well (beach was a good 15min walk) staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were lovely, old fashioned, but suited the town. If you're going to be out and about everyday and need basic accommodation in a good area this hotel is for you!

“Simple and nice, near everything.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

Very glad I found this place for 50 Euros/night. Skip the poor breakfast in a gloomy room - lots of places just down the street.
Half an hour phone to USA was 125 Euros -- glad someone else was paying.

“Good location, but small rooms in need of renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

We stayed at El Greco for a few days in July. The hotel is located in a quiet street in the old town, yet just a block away from the water front at the Venetian harbour, so the location was very good. But the room was very small and the bathroom too. There seemed to be a leak from a pipe in the bathroom because the floor was often wet, not only due to the lack of shower curtain.
We also had an unpleasant experience, which indicates a security problem at the hotel. Early one morning when we were getting ready to take an early bus to Samaria, we heard somebody fumbling with the lock at our door. Suddenly the person outside managed to open the door with her key (she was apparently drunk and had been out partying all night and went to the wrong room). In the evening when we came back from Samaria, we reported the incident to the receptionist, who immediately called someone (hotel management, hopefully) and then offered us to move to another room for the next night. She also said that they would check all room keys. So she handled the incident well considering the circumstances.
Breakfast at the hotel was just about ok, but the juice made of concentrate was not tasty at all, and overall the breakfast was not as good as other hotels we stayed at. There was supposed to be wifi connection in the room, but it did not work.

“Gem of Chanie”

Amazing hotel. Very cheap and clean. Bathrooms were a little small but other wise very good. We stayed on the 4th floor and had our own terrace with an amazing view of Chania. The lady at the front desk who works afternoons is a wealth of knowledge and very nice to talk to. Room was 55 euro per night but view alone was worth at least twice as much. Clean, quiet and close to all the action in Chania. Super hotel.
