“A romantic Crete holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2011

We were referred by friends who have stayed there twice. We wanted a place to relax without being near crowds but not feel too isolated and the farmhouse was just the perfect mix. We hired a car and drove around following Manolis' suggestions - he is such a sweet person. We had great dinners in Chania, the old town and the harbor, but also at small, very special places we would never be able to find on our own. We took the Samaria gorge day trip with other guests and cooked with Stella during a morning full of fun and laughs. In the evenings, we had good wine and snacks - our fridge was always full with delicacies Manolis kindly offered. The road noise was not a real problem, of course it would be ideal to have a longer distance from the main road but once you are there I think you are blown away by all this beauty and pure kindness, and all the rest do not seem to really matter. At least this was how we felt..

“Charming old farmhouse outside town, beautiful grounds, traffic noise a distraction”

Pros: Beautifully restored farmhouse and the best, kindest service you will ever have. Lovely fresh breakfast items every day, and your own kitchen to use. Pretty gardens. Wonderful owner and rental agent go above and beyond, and really made our trip to Crete a standout experience. Spot-on restaurant and beach recommendations for anywhere in Crete. Nicely away from the hustle and bustle of town, and a good homebase for driving all over and exploring the Western portion of the island in easy daytrips. We loved staying here, and all the cats, peacocks, and other animals roaming the yard.

Know that this is an old farmhouse and although the architecture and restoration work itself is stunning, the furnishings, bathroom, and kitchen fixtures feel "lived in" and dated. It looks from the photos like you get the whole house (what we thought anyway), but it's divided into 4 apartments. This means no noisy late-night rendezvous or nude dips in the "private" pool unless you don't mind your neighbors seeing or hearing you.

Cons: Traffic noise at night and early morning is much louder than you'd want in an otherwise secluded location. A bit too expensive for the age of the furnishings and fixtures in the property, but the delicious thoughtful breakfast items, late-night arrival snacks and drinks, and high quality service more than make up for it.

“Beautiful place to stay and terrific staff”

I can't over emphasize enough the helpfulness of the owner Manolis and the house keeper Linda. The farm is a gem and our stay was wonderful. It was definitely the highlight of our trip. We had fresh bread provided every day from a fabulous bakery in the City. Linda made preserves. Fruit came from the farm. We enjoyed being there so much that we ate most of our meals there using the well stocked kitchen. The farm is a great jumping off point for day trips.

“Heavenly!”

We found out about this little heaven from the Conde Nast travel magazine. Although you rarely get to see more reviews about this lovely villa, the few which were already posted here in Trip Advisor are true to form.

Manolis, the owner gave us the privacy we needed, but never too out of reach. When we arrived, we found our key readily placed in the door keyhole of villa Danae. Manolis was not in the vicinity. We courageously opened the door, let ourselves in, found a big welcome note on the table. I ransacked the fridge to see what's in store for us, (after reading about the lovely surprises from previous guests), I found a bottle of chilled Greek white wine, some cheeses, chocolates, eggs, tomatoes, lemon, yoghurt, preserves, olives, two boxes of organic apricots, strawberries and lots of oranges produced by the Metohi farm. We found more items in the drystores i.e home-made preserves, honey, toasts, bread and the usual coffee and tea selection. Danae is just so self sufficient that my husband insisted that he would like to prepare his own dinner, in our own compound, decorated with tea-lights, instead of going to Chania town for dinner! The kitchen was fully equipped with all the cooking utensils, sufficient for us to make a big breakfast every morning. How thoughtful of Monolis to equip us with an automatic juicer, so that we can make fresh orange juice every possible minute with hundreds of oranges packed in the fridge.

Danae is indeed a beautiful villa with a huge grass compound leading to a private pool. Our favorite time of the day was the outdoor breakfast moment, overlooking the pool, surrounded by our feline friends. (up till now, we are not sure of how many of them in the vicinity!) Apparently Danae was used as an oil factory in the past. It has a high ceiling, split levels for the bathroom and bedroom. Bathroom amenities were sufficient, with Korres products and lots of towels. We even found an old washing machine, but too afraid to use it. There was also a large treasure chest with CD player and a big selection of CDs inside. Crete guidebooks and some novels neatly arranged by the sitting lounge. The housekeeper came every day and the fridge was re-stocked with new surprises! We slept so well every night, but also eager to wake up every morning to enjoy every bit of our villa.

Chania town is just about 8 mins drive from Metohi Kindelis. You just need to follow the road signs, passing thru a residential area before reaching the city centre. Find a parking the moment you reach the city centre and walk toward the crowd as you will surely find the Venetian harbour within seconds. We were surprised to see how crowded Chania is and we were glad that we have chosen to stay at Metohi, away from the hustle bustle of the city and yet not too far.

Prior to visiting Metohi Kindelis, do email Manolis for the exact location and driving direction. His directions were very useful to us and we found the villa easily. The Kindelis property consists of 3 villas. Although the villas are not very far away from each other, due to the large compound and high walls, we can hardly spot our neighbours. Infact, we could not even peek into the other 2 villas!

We highly recommend this little piece of heaven for those wanting to be near Chania, and yet prefer to retreat to a quiet sanctuary nearby. Metohi Kindelis is also very suitable for families especially those with children. A family of 4 can comfortably fit into Danae farmhouse. The living room itself has 2 day beds which also serve as sofas. Children can run around freely in each farmhouse's compound and having a well-stocked kitchen means you can prepare light snacks or even a hearty meal anytime! It's also good to stroll along the orchard learning about the different organic plants and getting to know the residents (i.e turkey, ducks, cats and dogs).

Thank you, Manolis for your hospitality and for allowing us to have a taste of your little heaven. We will surely return, hopefully in the near future.

We have been staying in the wonderful houses here for at least 5 years. The last few years we stayed in Danae. We just love the very private pool area. It is more like another huge outside room with fridge, music and a large lounging area. We find it hard to get motivated to do anything more than eat some of the organic products that appear in your fridge as if by magic and cool off in the pool.

It is a working fruit farm, all organic with the strawberries taking 1st prize. I think they are exported over the world but to taste fresh picked is something else.

The main highway is only a few hunded yards away but we have never felt that this disturbs the calm. It is quite easy to be lost in your own little bubble and smile at all mad fools rushing about and getting nowhere.

The essence off the place is understated quality, all the modern fittings but just slipped hardly unnoticed into the houses, to blend in with the age and character of the building..

Manolis just likes you do do you own thing but he has suggested quite a few places to visit or eat at and he has never been wrong yet. Some are not on the usual tourist maps and can take some finding but thats what local knowledge brings.

True it isn't the cheapest place you will find but if you want save and pay a bit more ...... Well we think its worth it and keep coming back.
