We recently stayed at Samonas for 10 days in May, 2010 during our visit to Crete. This was our second trip to Crete - our first was 10 years ago and we stated in Chania. The location was spectacular: in a small village in the mountains of Crete near Chania, with goats, pigs, sheep, and chickens wandering about the pastures nearby. The buildings were very well restored: beautiful architecture, traditional materials and layouts, but with modern amenities. Our apartment had fridge, kitchen, washer/dryer. Getting there is a 25 minute drive up a mountain road through small villages - very beautiful. Services included (among others) a pool, sun deck, fitness room, BBQ, and other little extras: local foods (jams, wine) were available for purchase on site. The owner (Konstantinos) organized an on-site barbecue one afternoon with the guests and some friends, which turned out to be quite enjoyable and provided everyone with a more homey taste of Greek hospitality. A nearby local taverna offered meals from local produce and meats from her farm, and was very reasonably priced. The roosters did wake us up early each day (and that took some getting used to but we did after a few days). Overall, Samonas was a real treat and we highly recommend it.
