“Loved the location and the friendliness of the owner”

We came to Chania, and fell in love with it, and now plan to stay for the winter. The ontas traditional rooms are just that, decorated in traditional decor which befits the location. Tucked between 2 of the popular spots to hang out. The location is one of the best features of this property. Its walking distance between the touristy yet lovely old harbour and the more trendy sea front area where the locals frequent in Koum Kapi.
Its close enough to the action without the crazy noise and buzz of the harbour. We were treated to the suite, which is just lovely. Its a split level design, with a loft style area as the main bedroom. Cant believe how good the value for money was on this find. The owner is just adorable, his name is vassilis and we loved having chats with him. He was very hospitable and friendly, and went beyond the call of duty to help us look for an appartment for the winter. He speaks English quite well, since he has lived abroad for many years and is well travelled.
Overall we would recommend this hotel, for all the reasons, the location, the rooms, the wonderful service/staff and for the cutest little kitten which sits curled up in the sun at the entrance.

  • Liked — The excellent location, friendly owner, very nice rooms
  • Disliked — The fact I couldnt keep the resident kitten

“Petite and warm”

I would like to make a comment for the traditional hotel Ontas I stayed in Chania. This is a petite and warm hotel in a very good location in Chania (center of the old town). Around us we had many tavernas which someone could eat really magnificent cretan cuisine. Of course it is near to the old venetian harbor where someone can have a romantic night walk seeing the sea and the view of this picturesque venetian harbor. I also enjoyed my walk in the pedestrian roads with old venetian houses.
The rooms were quite clean and the wooden furnishing give a warm sense.
If you go there I would suggest to book the suite with the loft which is room with internal ladder leading to nice upstair double bed.
Also the value was great.

I liked very much this charming place (old venetian tower) with traditional decoration. Very good location with beautiful surroundings and buildings. I liked the evenings with local drink tsikoudia.

“A warm welcome and a cool room - perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2007

We also stayed during the heatwave, and I agree entirely that the air conditioning really was the saviour of our holiday - despite the intense heat outside, even at night, we still found that we were waking up shivering at 5am - which was a good thing! We arrived late at night after a long bus journey from Heraklion, and despite having to carry my suitcase up two flights of stairs, the welcome we received was wonderful; the owner is a kindly, helpful man who speaks good english and, when not keeping the hotel spotless and emptying traditional greek bins of toilet paper from the rooms, spends his days watching the world go by from his chair in front of the hotel. Though it may be 'traditional' in name and style, the hotel has been refurbished recently to a high standard. The rooms have lots of storage space, shutters on the windows to keep the rooms cool, a good-sized yet amazingly silent fridge with icebox and firm yet comfortable beds with a variety of bedding.

If you want to stay right by the venetian harbour but don't want to pay high prices for inevitably noisy rooms at the western, touristy end of the harbour, you really can't get much better than this. If you're looking for things to do in the evenings, mere metres from the hotel entrance are a row of lively tavernas that stay open until very late - too lively for some, perhaps, but a few more steps and you find yourself surrounded by quieter fish restarants - the restaurant immediately to your left at the end of the street coming onto the harbour is especially good (ask to be taken inside and choose your own fish from the freezer). Despite its proximity to Chania's vibrant heart, the hotel's windows let in little sound - I'm a very light sleeper, yet I still slept perfectly every night.

Overall, Traditional Hotel Ontas provided the perfect central base from which to explore the harbour, city and much of mid-and-western Crete.

  • Liked — The rooms were little bubbles of cool and calm away from the heat and bustle of Chania

“A/C works great!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2007

Since we were in Crete for record heats - 40 to 44 C - our most important feature for a room was the A/C. The room was tiny as are most Greek rooms but the air conditioning worked great. We were able to cool off after a day of sightseeing and even sleep at night. Great location to walk all over town. Laundromat was nearby - drop off the laundry and come back in about 4 hours to pick up clean clothes.
