“If we return to Crete for a third time, we can stay here again.”

Just got back from Crete two days ago. Stayed at Canea Mare Hotel and Apartments. Good value for the money. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Not a huge resort hotel with entertainment every night, but that we already knew that we booked. Hotel was kept very clean and the rooms basic, as to be expected. But who spends a lot of time in the room anyway. We travelled with two children, so my husband and I had a separate bedroom and we therefor had two balconies. It wasn´t noisy at night. Our room was only two doors from the exit to the pool area. I found the bed slightly hard, but my husband thought it was perfect. Canea Mare was much closer to the Agia Marina beach than what I had thought. From the hotel you just crossed the Agias Marinas street, walked 5-10 meters( or yards), between small hotels, and there was the beach! Plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. Can recommend Mtsos Restaurant, also right across the Agia Marinas Street. Great food, family owned, teriffic service and lovely surroundings right by the beach. We had dinner there, four nights out of seven. And they didn´t have a pushy person by the entrance, trying to convince you to try their food. They didn´t have to. People kept coming back anyway. We rented a car for the week and the hotel has a parkingarea for six cars, on the side of the building. So that worked out well. They have computer in the gameroom, that you can use. You had to pay 1 Euro per 20 minutes, I think. I hope somebody finds this review helpful.

“Great hotel with excellent location”

We stayed att Canea Mare. Booked through an internet agency and got a great price. The hotel is clean, proper and has a great pool area. There are a lot of sunbeds and a nice bar and restaurant. There is also a playground and an arcade hall snf internet café for the older children.
The apartments are basic. We hade a 2-bedroom-apartment with a small kitchenette which was sufficient for our needs. If you can ask for an apartment not facing the street since the restaurant across the street sometimes has live music.

The staff was very friendly towards us, and we could change apartment at one time to stay closer to our friends without any problems. We could also keep one of the apartments for the day since we had an evening flight. They were also very nice towards the children and helpful with all our questions. They helped us book a rental car and the cars were delivered straight to the hotel.

In all - a great hotel, great value!

“Far from Luxury- As the sign says in front of the hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2009

We chose the Canea Mare as a home base from which to make day trips from as we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary because it appeared to be close to Chania and near the sea, shops and restaurants. The sign in front of the hotel says "Luxury Hotel". As we checked in on the first day, we were asked if we wanted air conditioning. We said yes and then were told that it would cost us an additional seven Euros a day. This would be the first "Luxury Hotel" we had ever stayed at that charged extra just to keep us cool. Our room for the next eight nights was spartan to say the least. There was nothing on any of the walls other than a sheet of paper with the "rules" that we were told to obey. No pictures, no artwork of any kind. There was a very small TV up in a corner with several holes in the wall around it where they must have tried to affix it.
There was no shampoo of any kind in the bathroom, just a couple of bars of soap.

The walls in this place are so thin that one morning at 5:00 am I heard the alarm go off in the room next to us. We then heard the people in there talking about their upcoming day for the next 20 or 30 minutes. They were not speaking in loud voices , but the sound resonated through the walls and kept us awake.

Breakfast is served only from 8:30am onwards. As we arose at 7:00am most days we ended up driving 10 minutes up the road to a bakery that was open to get our morning coffee.

The first morning that we were there I left the electrical power activation card in the slot in the wall while we went out in order to keep the room reasonably cool until our return later that day. When we returned later the card was missing. The lady at reception whose name was Kelly told me that I shouldn't leave the card there while we went out. I asked her why she didn't tell me this when we checked in. She replied "live and learn".

They reluctantly gave me a new card and after scolding me for removing it.
Anyway I could go on and on but suffice it to say that It was not a very pleasant experience staying there, especially with attitude of Kelly, who clearly is in the wrong line of work.

The one staff member who was helpful was the older man who seemed to work the night shift most nights. The others could do well by learning a little politeness from him.

This place would be greatly improved if the staff, especially Kelly would treat guests with a little more respect. Having breakfast begin earlier than 8:30am would be useful as well. A few pictures on the walls would be nice, and maybe a little shampoo would be a nice touch. After all, it is a "Luxury Hotel".

In closing I must share with you Kelly's most memorable line. When I asked her about paying extra for air conditioning, she replied, "Its a free world".. What ever that means..

We loved Crete but would never return to this place again.

“Very good value”

Stayed here for one week. Basic amenities in room, very clean, and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Internet facilities available, also has a small game room with video games and airhockey tables. The bus stop to Chania is conveniently right in front of the hotel, and beach is very nearby. Pool area also nice with bar & food available. Was overall very pleased, recommended as an excellent choice for a 3 star-type hotel.
