We are a couple and stayed in an apartment with a double bed on a mezzanine level. The apartment was small, but had a kitchenette and a shower with plenty of hot water and excellent drainage. There was AC.
The stairs leading up to the mezzanine are quite steep and maybe not suitable for someone elderly.
The service was very friendly, there is a small swimming pool in the courtyard. The kitchenette was equipped with basics, including two hotplates, a grill and a fridge, crockery and some cutlery.
The lighting was a little dark, especially on the ground floor. The apartment was cleaned every day, towels were provided (and could be replaced every day if you wanted) the bed was changed a couple of times in our one week stay.
Unfortunately there was a building site right behind the villa and we were quite dismayed to see it at first. Our small bedroom window actually looked on to it. However in the end it didn't disturb us that much as the heavy work was already finished, they were mostly tiling the roofs. They started work in the morning at about 8am and were finished for the day by 2pm. No noise in the evening. It's expected to be completed by December 2007 but I would think that the noise levels will decrease significantly as soon as the outside is completed (which it almost is).
Overall we enjoyed staying there as it was private, secure, and away from the tourist crowds. However, you WILL need a hire car as it is right at the top of Archanes. The roads in Archanes are very narrow and some are steep so you need to be a confident driver and you should hire a small car!
Archanes is near Knossos, one of the main archeological attractions of Crete. Heraklion (and the airport) are about 30 mins drive away.
Overall I would recommend it but maybe call them in advance to ask the state of the building work.
