“Lovely hotel, great people!”

It was the third time I stayed at Hotel Galaxa with my wife and my two young children (6 and 9)…and for once more we really enjoyed there! Galaxidi is a nice traditional town by the sea with old captain houses and only 30 minutes-drive away from the famous ancient oracle of Delphi and 1h from Monastery of Osios Loukas.
Hotel Galaxa is a charming old captain’s house in blue and white renovated into a traditional family hotel of 10 rooms with a nice terrace having a gorgeous view over the town’s harbour.
The owners, Manolis and his wife are very pleasant and friendly. They are there for you to suggest places to visit, where to have a delicious meal/dinner, or … just to have a nice chat!
The day starts with a full breakfast served in the terrace when the weather is nice. You can have toasted bread, coffee, fresh juice, milk, eggs, warm croissants and baked cake. Not to mention the variety of unique home made marmalades. Strawberry and apricot are my favourites. My children really loved a marmalade of mixed-fruit… although it was not my taste. We asked if we could buy some for the children... and Manolis offered a jar of mixed-fruit marmalade as a gift. How cool was that!!!
Our room on the up-front floor was nice and pretty clean. It must be one of the largest at the hotel as it could room easily 4 people. The whole style is in blue and white. I really loved the bed, as it was not a usual one. It was built-up on the floor and the mattress was really thick. That I was not really enthusiast about was the room’s private bathroom. It was clean, but quite small. I should have expected that though …" ‘cause it is an old captain’s house after all!" Apart from that, our room had a lovely balcony that viewed over the harbour. I relaxed there a lot reading my book until the sunset after a busy day at the sea. You can also relax at the hotel’s terrace in case your room doesn’t have a balcony. It is quite and peaceful there also. You can have ouzo served there, or some fresh fruits. The only you have to do is …just ask Manolis!
We are looking forward to visiting again Hotel Galaxa and Galaxidi town. Next time will be for sure at the famous Galaxidi flour war Carnival on Ash Monday (usually on last Monday of February). Judging by the videos on the internet... it's good fun!

Room Tip: Up-front rooms are the best. With balcony.

“If your only choice of hotel in Galaxidi is Galaxa, go to another town”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

At 60euro per night, if you do not find another hotel in Galaxidi, do NOT stay here. This place should be condemned and burned to the ground. It offers no old world charm but rather an overpriced cheap imitation of old. It is nowhere near the town center that they say, especially in the heat of summer, you need to drive, in which case, you will not be able to park again. Just stay somewhere else and if you don't find anywhere else, it's still worth it to stay in Itea and drive to Galaxidi

“A disapointing experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2008

We stayed at this hotel only for one night, on our way home. We were expecting a 1st class hotel (as stated on their web site) but ended up being very disappointed.

I made a reservation for 4 adults but got a double room with two additional beds in it. Also, our room did not have any sea view. The street our window was facing was extremely noisy even after midnight. The bathroom is probably the worst one I have ever been in (not very clean, only the remnants of the shelf on the wall, nowhere to hang the clothing, the water from the sink hardly flows...). Add the mosquitoes to all this to get the complete picture.

“Nice Hotel, Great Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2008

The Hotel Galaxa is a converted captain's house with a beautiful (and "beautiful" might be an understatement) view across a small harbor to the town.

Galaxidi itself is a charming, friendly town and was one of the highlights of our trip to Greece. The hotel manager, rightly, called it "an island you can drive to." January was a perfect time to visit. It was cool, pleasant weather and almost deserted (there were only a small handful of tourists in town, and as far as we could tell we were the only native English speakers around).

The town is a great place to walk around. There is a line of restaurants along the port road. Fishing boats drop by in the evening to drop off fresh fish directly into the hands of restaurant owners. Some restaurants are better than others-- be sure to look at the menus and go to the ones that advertise fresh fish. At one, sorry but I didn't write down the name, they allowed you to pick your own fish and shellfish, and we ended up having one of the best meals of our trip-- simply prepared, moist, tender, and generally excellent.

Galaxidi is known more as a tourist destination for Athenians rather than for foreigners, although this will inevitably change as more people find out what a nice place it is. I am sorry to contribute to the sad process of spoiling an unspoiled town. We used the town as our base for exploring nearby Delphi.

Back at the Galaxa, rooms 4 and 5 have balconies and a five-star, 180 degree panorama view of the town and harbor. The other rooms also have nice views, but not quite as good, I think. There is a very nice outdoor patio and bar (the bar is closed in the winter) with fresh fruit, including oranges and tangerines, left out for you to take.

The room was large and comfortable, with good cross-ventilation. There was a small refrigerator and tea/coffee making facilities, which meant a lot to us.

As a converted house, the guest rooms are close together, and wooden stairs can mean noise at night as people return. One night was noisy, the next two were very quiet, so it depends on how quiet and polite other people want to be. There was no street noise at all.

Breakfast was very good. The food was fresh and tasty, including special New Years cookies. The breakfast room was smoky, although (thankfully) no one smoked while we were eating breakfast. The manager and staff were nice, and spoke fluent English (he also spoke French and Italian, I think). Most of the shopowners and restaurateurs also spoke at least a little English, so no problems getting by.

We loved Galaxidi and enjoyed the Galaxa.

  • Liked — The town and the view from the balcony. Also the teamaking facilities, refrigerator and overall room comfort.
  • Disliked — Being awakened by other guests stomping up the stairs at night. Smoky breakfast room.

“There Must be Somewhere Else...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2007

We wanted to go to Delphi, but did not want to stay in the town. Galaxidi sounded like the perfect alternative. After reading the reviews, we reluctantly booked this hotel, realizing what it would be like. Now, I will admit that I like comfortable accommodations and don't mind paying for them, but this hotel did not provide my number one requirement - cleanliness. The owner is charming, and we got one of the balcony rooms with a view over the harbor. The room looked as though it was longing for a bucket of water and some strong soap. Some of the walls in the bathroom/shower had strange brown marks, and I started to clean, but then realized it would take days to clean it. The bed was basically on the floor, and the blanket had some spots encrusted on top. The sheets, which looked freshly ironed, turned out to be made of a rubberized material - never needing to be ironed and always looking fresh. (Let me point out that as a student in Europe, I did a lot of backpacking and staying at iffy places, but the cost for this hotel put it above the typical student range.) Having read the review about the mosquitoes, we closed the windows and used the wicks while we went out to dinner. (Good thing - there were about 10 dead mosquitoes on our return.) Going in the bathroom after dinner, I found we were not alone, and after killing two cockroaches, we decided to leave the next day. As we left we noticed a supply of clean towels had been delivered, but no sheets. How often might they be changed?
