“stinking jail house room”

We experienced the worst night ever in this hotel. Due to the beautiful fotos in the internet we booked online and arrived in the late afternoon. Still we had to wait due to repair issues. As we finally got into the room we were shocked!! There were no windows, the room was tiny, the bathroom old and worn and - worst of all - this jailhouse was stinking intensively of old smoke. We immediately asked for another room, but due to the receptionist there was no other available. They offered us to give us the money back - and we could go ahead an look for another hotel. As we only had one evening in town we did not think this as an option for us - BIG MISTAKE! I did not sleep a second due to the smoked filled air, the stinking blankets and cusions. And as noted: there was no possibility to open a window to let fresh air into the room. A stinking jail house room!!!

“The rooftop terrace provided inspirational view and a place for relaxation and reflection.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

We found fine hospitality at the Magna Grecia four nights in September. The location was perfect. Opening our window onto the Mitropoli plaza or sitting on the rooftop terrace we listened to the sounds of life on the plaza below and watched the changing light on the Acropolis above. The rooms were clean and quiet, particularly the back room. On the front side, the heavy windows closed off the noise of the street. Breakfast was great, thanks to the sweet hostess in charge, and we enjoyed picnic suppers several evenings enjoying the lights on the Parthenon after dark. We began our Greek holiday here, and came back for a night in the middle and at the end. We were heartily welcomed back each time and enjoyed the quiet ambience as the perfect place to reflect on our travels. Hope to come back someday......

“a special opportunity not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2010

top notch location across from historic plaka district with stunning views of the acropolis...worth paying extra for the view...beautiful historic decor in guest rooms, hallways, and breakfast area...very generous breakfast...even fresh-squeezed orange juice...terrace has one of the best views in the city...extremely helpful staff...even made up an extra breakfast for me to-go as I had to leave at 4:00 a.m. to catch an early morning flight...I have stayed several places in Athens over the years but this was by far the best

“No sleep at night - Δεν μπορείς να κοιμηθείς το βράδυ”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2010

The negative reviews here are correct.
In summary:
* terrible bed for 2 people
* cannot sleep at night from the noise of the clock on the church outside the window. I am surprised that other people did not mention this but it was terrible. I could measure the ding-dongs every hour all night.
* tiny elevator - barely fits 2 people with 1 luggage
* no easy access - you have to climb several steps to get in the building
* the rooms have no noise insulation. Noise from the other rooms will keep you wide awake all night and the banging of other doors makes our bedroom door rattle.

Positives of hotel:
* location
* views: you can admire the Parthenon all night from your room window - this however applies only to double bed rooms - the single ones face the other side
* cute interior design that takes you on a time travel

We were a group of 5 people in 3 different rooms and we all had the same problem: did not get any sleep. We had a reservation for 3 nights but since we did not sleep we checked out, lost all of our money and went to another hotel!

Unless they make some improvements to this hotel (accessibility and noise insulation), then this hotel is a disaster.

“This hotel elicits strong opinions on both sides”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

Some folks love this place and some hate it. We stayed here for three nights in October and can understand both points of view. This is an older hotel that reminds me of places I stayed in 35 years ago. The "inside" rooms have views of the elevator shaft and hallway. They can be dark and dreary. The elevator is tiny; barely big enough for 2 people and the air conditioning can be iffy. But the help is very pleasant, the breakfast is good, the location is excellent, and...the view of the acropolis is simply unbelievable. So, the outside rooms are well worth the price, and the view is available to all on the breakfast patio. All the guidebooks will tell you where to go for the best views and note that you will have to pay an exorbitant price for your coffee or drinks in order to get it. The view here is better than all those and it is free.
