“A nice stay with perfect location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

I stayed at the Magna Grecia with three other family members during Dec 2011/Jan 2012, we stayed for a total of 8 nights and were satisfied with our choice. Since it was low season we only had to pay 100 euros a night for a deluxe room with an acropolis view. Very worth the 100 Euros. After being given rooms on different floors for the first four nights, we requested if we could have rooms on the same floor for the second half of our stay The lady on the reception during the day (can't believe I have forgotten her name - but she was very friendly and helpful) made changes so that our two rooms could be next to each other on the first floor.

When we initially arrived in Athens, we caught the train from the airport to Syntagma station and then walked the 10mins to the hotel. It is very conveniently located. It is so close to good cafes and restaurants, tourist shops, department stores and all the mains shopping district. It is a short walk from the Ancient Agora which then leads up to the Acropolis.

When looking out my bedroom window/balcony for the first time I was speechless. The view was absolutely amazing! To see the Parthenon lit up every night from my bed was awesome.

A few previous comments have complained about the church bells. Yes, the hotel is opposite a cathedral and the bells ring every hour. I am not a deep sleeper, yet I had no problem sleeping through the bells. They never woke me, nor my other family members till it got to 7:30am and the extremely long and loud chime would start. This acted as our alarm - as we wanted to get up and do things, but if you want to sleep in this may be an issue. I don't think the bells are as bad as many make them seem, they add a nice element to the place.

In saying this to be a luxury hotel, I probably wouldn't make that same label. It is not shabby and is nicely decorated, but just little aspects need fixing up. Things like a visible patched up crack in the wall, a few creaky floor boards and other minor things. I don't tend to analyse every detail, as no where is going to be perfect. But if you are picky, these are the things you would probably take more note of and complain of. The rooms were always neatly presented, the cleaning staff were friendly, and the breakfast buffet was lovely. Breakfast on the roof overlooking the acropolis was great. Really nice yoghurt and pastries, and squeezing your own orange juice was something we always looked forward to.

Eating at the Acropolis restaurant was a nice experience too. They had a special set menu for New Years Eve, which we attended. For 50 euros pp, you received a choice of entree, soup, salad, bread, main meal and dessert/coffee. Then at 12am a glass of champagne. It is a small restaurant but the wait staff are friendly and the food is good. We had a nice view of the fireworks and acropolis from the restaurant balcony too. An event we will never forget.

I would stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: Out of the 3 rooms we stayed in at the hotel room 104 was by far the best. Most spacious and best be...

“Nice boutique hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

It's a nice boutique hotel at the very center of Athens.
The rooms are of average size, with all the middle class hotel amenities provided. The mattress is really good. The bath is ok and you will find the basics there, you would better be well prepared though.
The view of Acropolis is AWESOME!!!
The hotel staff was not that that will make you feel like home. The breakfast quality was the average of hotels of this class. Decent enough to eat it.
Sound isolation is an issue. You can hear everything that goes on around your room! Door safety is another problem. You don't feel safe behind that door.

“It's a lie”

Don't know where to start. I am a Greek American that travels to Greece at least every year, so I know the country well. I'm generally well traveled and have experienced accommodations from low to exceedingly high end.

Here's the reality of this "boutique" hotel: They've put lipstick on a pig, are calling it something that it is not, and have attitude about it. The web site is very well done, contains photos of the property but is not in any way a true portrait. It is very good at showing the lipstick while hiding the pig. The owners have definitely done a great deal to decorate the place (in questionable, very kitschy but fun taste) but not addressed the really poor (in quality and age) shape of the place at all. It's possible that the suites in the front are ok (I did not get to see them) but we were placed in a shabby ghetto like room (called a suite) with a 70's bathroom that was disgusting. The furniture I suspect was meant to appear antique-y but frankly was nothing more than cleaned up flea market standards. I was dismayed to find that the safe was never bolted down and I had no problem moving it (all 125 pounds on me). We had an interior window suite (I've had that experience before and I was fine with it) that overlooked a steel spiral staircase. ***Note that these are their "family suites" - they finally admitted this to us after we arrived, saw the room and requested an upgrade. It gave us full and intimate access to the conversations of guests waiting for the elevator or going to breakfast not to mention the full sounds of the renovation crew through the night as they carried and clanged aluminum ladders up and down the levels desperately trying to finish the decor of the next floor in time for the high season bookings. I think this is a great indicator of guest services attitude at this place. Another indicator was the breakfast crew telling us that they were shutting down when we showed up 20 minutes prior to breakfast ending and the buffet had already been cleared. We thought it amusing the next morning when we were having breakfast at a cafe next door and saw one of the hotel kitchen crew running between the hotel and a grocery store with food basics mid morning. We canceled our end of trip return reservations and warned our friends to do so as well (I had given them the idea to reserve naively thinking the web site could not have been that off). The location was perfect. But that's it. We are still referring to it as our Magna Disasta.

“Absolutely overrated, not worth the money”

Stayed at Magna Grecia in July 2009 for a few nights to explore Athens. Based on TripAdvisor reviews thought it's a nice boutique hotel in central location with all standard middle-class hotel amenities. Well, the location is central indeed. But the total lack of service and interest of the staff (room on 2nd floor, but noone ever even offered to help us with the luggage, no information about anything, no friendly greetings...), the disgraceful breakfast, the super-tiny room, ultrasoft mattress (basically a piece of foam) and questionable cleanliness made it a really disappointing experience. If you're totally desperate for location and don't care about anything else, this might be for you. But if you expect anything else from service, food or room quality for the relatively high price they're charging, stay away.

“Great hotel, wonderful location”

We stayed at Magna Grecia in Athens on our first night in Greece. The room was small, but had everything we needed - including an inward facing room not on the main road. The roof top terrace is quite lovely with good views of the acropolis, though the restaurant there is quite pricey. Magna Grecia is a short walk from two main metro stations, which is a real selling point of this place, as well as the location in a lovely part of historic Athens. The service here is also great - we left early in the morning before the buffet breakfast opened and the hotel staff packed us a very filling breakfast. Would definitely stay here again!
