“Building works meant fire hazard and no breakfast”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

OK first the good points. The room was clean and well appointed. There was a good balcony and the room (on 7th floor) was quiet. The heater unit struggled with the cold but it was acceptable. The bad point is that building work was taking place in the lobby and reception. This is understandable in the off season but it did mean that the breakfast we had paid for was not provided. When we booked in we were told that other arrangements would be made but this did not happen then we were told there would be a refund but this did not happen. Worse, on the second day of our two day stay there was scaffolding in the lobby meaning that to get out of the hotel we had to clamber over metal scaffolding covered in plaster dust. This was clearly a serious fire hazard and we were glad we were leaving. This hotel should not have been open during these works and we should have been offered an alternative.

“Brilliant value and we really enjoyed our stay!”

We booked the hotel for a final few days of the holiday after returning from island hopping. We found the hotel walking around the city before we left and thought the service when we enquired about a room and the quality of the hotel was brilliant (no different if not better to the 4 star we were staying in on the other side of town- Illisos). We had to add another night while away and did this by emailing; we received a polite and prompt response.

We arrived at the hotel in the early hours of the morning and the area was dead, very quiet and no disturbances. Service was excellent on arrival and we were really impressed with the quality of the room (no different to the 4* we stayed in in Athens). The air con, wi fi and tv all worked really well. The only fault is the view which did look over a scrotty looking apartment. But it's a bonus to have a balcony in the city! Breakfast in the morning was fab. Eggs, ham, cheese, bread, fruit, yoghurt etc. We stayed 3 nights and thought the service and quality of cleaning was great.

So where's the catch for a room only costing 30 euros a night?! You don't need to read many reviews on here to see that there are a lot of the areas in Athens that are a bit rough, as in any big city, and this is one of those areas. Unless you're staying in expensive Plaka, I think you'll find all areas are the same (as we found in our 4* in the south of the city). However, we liked the pedestrianised area and leafy feel of the area this hotel is in with some quite local cheap bars. There is a heavy police presence and we never felt threatened or were approached.

And as some reviews say on here, the hotel obviously has a room where the prostitutes take their clients. However, this didn't really seem seedy and it's obviously a good income for the hotel in the current climate. It really didn't bother us at all but if you're faint hearted, it might.

Overall we were REALLY REALLY impressed with the service and value. Thank you Epidavros :)

“Doubles as a Brothel!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011 via mobile

I stayed here with my girlfriend the night before I left Athens, the morning of checkout we were sitting in the lobby taking care of some internet business, and we noticed several scantily clad girls going up the side elevator followed by a man, only to return about 20 min later, and then come back with a different man not long after that! Other than that, the rooms are Spartan but adequate, so if you need a cheap place to sleep and dont mind staying in a house of ill repute, Epidavros is for you!

“good value city centre accomodation”

Very friendly staff and clean rooms. Buffet style breakfast was limited in choice but enough to set you up for the day. You can't escape the fact that the hotel is not in the most salubrious location, however, we were not harrassed or apporached in any way. The regular police patrols made us feel quite secure - far more so than we would have done in an equivalent area of London! Besides, it is only 5 mins walk to Omonia metro station. There is a very good authentic Greek restaurant, Cafe Babylon, directly opposite the entrance to the hotel. We liked it so much we ate there twice! A good place to spend one or two nights in Athens.

“City hotel for the night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

Stayed there for 2 nights and 1 day. Really wanted to see Athens. The hotel is situated 2 minutes walk from Omonia metro station. But to find it in the streets is difficult. The area in which it is not very good. Day rolled around and noisy street trading. The hotel itself is old. The rooms are clean. A good breakfast. A small price speaks for itself.

Room Tip: only for the night
