We had booked a 4 night stay at Melia as the reviews and price seemed reasonable but from the moment we arrived at the hotel, the service we received did not live up to its positive reviews.
We arrived at the hotel around 9:45pm and as we were bringing our luggage into the hotel, one of our suitcases got trapped in the revolving doors and we struggled to get it. I gestured helplessly to the reception and caught the lady's eye, but she just looked down at the computer screen and pretended she didn't see anything. In the end, our taxi driver, who was about to drive away, got out of his car to help us push the heavy revolving doors so we could get our luggage out and helped us move the remaining suitcases into the hotel lobby. (there weren't any bell boys around when we arrived)
When we got to our room and wanted water to drink, we noticed there wasn't any complimentary bottled water nor hot water boiler - all of the other four hotels we stayed in during our time in Greece offered either option, if not both. When my husband called to ask the front desk about this, the guy on the phone just kept insisting we should just drink the tap water straight from the tap. When we responded that we didn't feel comfortable about that, even though he persisted that it was safe, he responded by saying that if we were to get sick after drinking the tap water, then we could go see a doctor afterwards and then the hotel would be responsible for it afterwards. Not quite the helpful response and solution we were expecting when late at night and dehydrated! It was only when we tried calling again the next morning to housekeeping, did we manage to get a hot water boiler. (In the end, we just bought bottled water and bring back to the hotel, as even AFTER we boiled the water, there were still white particles in the water - see photos
we also had trouble calling housekeeping - I pressed the button on the phone which said "housekeeping" but it took me to some other department. Whoever answered insisted that i had dialed the wrong extension, and when i tried to explain that i had simply pressed the button which read "housekeeping' on the hotel phone, he kept saying that i must have made a mistake because he wasn't housekeeping.
As we weren't familiar with Athens yet, we thought it would be useful to ask the front desk to pinpoint the hotel's location on the map which they gave us when we checked in. I'm not sure how it happened, as we thought the hotel staff would know where their own hotel was located, but he identified a different location on the map (we later realised that location was Parnon Hotel when we were lost!). We were walking around in circles and trying to find the right street according to the hotel's map as indicated by their staff, until finally a helpful passerby noticed we were confused and walked us to the hotel and informed us that our map was incorrect!
We also received unhelpful service from the hotel staff when we enquired about the wifi charges and login details. My husband personally went down to the front desk to ask to avoid miscommunication over the phone. When he asked about login details and payment for using wifi in our room, the front desk staff kept saying there was no wifi available in the rooms, and only a lan wire, and kept brushing him away. My husband explained several times that there was wifi in our room and the wifi payment and login page loaded up on our laptop so he just wanted to know how he could pay for it, then the staff member said "oh your room is on 3rd or 4th floor? it has wifi but you have to pay." So my husband repeated again that he knew he has to pay and wants to know the payment and login details and the staff member just kept repeating, 'you have to pay to use it'. It took him 10 minutes at the front desk to get the login details for the wifi.
After we returned home, i wrote to the hotel and raised these issues with them. The reservations department responded in a day to say they would forward my complaints to the relevant department. After 9 days, i still haven't heard back from the hotel regarding my email.
