I booked the Hotel Marina based on internet information. It is located near the Omonia Metro Station in the downtown area of Athens. I figured it was centrally located for sightseeing.
The hotel interior was nice and clean. It had marble floors, nice breakfast room, and the managers were very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious, with a good bed, and the shower was excellent. Breakfast was particularly good.
However, the area around the hotel left much to be desired, with debris on the streets, graffiti on many buildings, youth loitering, and some evidence of crime activity (ie, drug use and prostitution). I saw graffiti throughout the city. I felt sorry for the owners, telling them that city officials were remiss and needed to do more to clean up those conditions, as it hurt them and other local businesses.
