“Good Hotel, Bad Area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

I booked the Hotel Marina based on internet information. It is located near the Omonia Metro Station in the downtown area of Athens. I figured it was centrally located for sightseeing.

The hotel interior was nice and clean. It had marble floors, nice breakfast room, and the managers were very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious, with a good bed, and the shower was excellent. Breakfast was particularly good.

However, the area around the hotel left much to be desired, with debris on the streets, graffiti on many buildings, youth loitering, and some evidence of crime activity (ie, drug use and prostitution). I saw graffiti throughout the city. I felt sorry for the owners, telling them that city officials were remiss and needed to do more to clean up those conditions, as it hurt them and other local businesses.

Room Tip: The room was good, but some areas in Athens may feel unsafe.

“Good hotel in a bad street”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

The street where the hotel is located is very dirty and in the afternoon there are a lot of drog dealers. From the second day we got used to it and they do not care about the tourists. Good rate between price and quality.

“Nice stayed!”

I just came from Athens. I had a wonderful weekend at Athens with my husband. The hotel was lovely, and staff were very polite and helpful. Our room was large with big bathroom and shower-cabin. I found our room very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good with two different sort of breads, 3 sorts of hams, cheese, yoghourt, sweets, fruits, cake and etc. The location was perfect for any kind of transportation or walk. Really the area looks very scared but nobody bothered to us. Police was everywhere! Thank you very much for the pleasant stay.

“We had a great trip. Excellent service and lovely hotel.”

We had such a great trip. The hotel isn't located in a great area but is fantastically close to the city centre and all the sights. It is barely a 5 minute walk to reach the restaurants, shops and busy historical centre. It is a true diamond in the rough as the hotel itself is lovely and very homely. The hotel is also surrounded by some of the most impressive street art we have ever seen and we spent a really enjoyable morning photographing this during our stay.

Whilst here I was unfortunate enough to fall ill on a Sunday night but the staff at the hotel were amazing. They called an ambulance for me, translated for us and even helped us to find a pharmacy open at 11pm on a Sunday night (Quite a feat in Athens!).

“Good hotel well situated.”

We had two nights at the Marina Hotel, and found it very comfortable. It is an old hotel, but well maintained and clean. The staff were very helpful with advice on where to eat, what to see and how to see it. It is only a short walk to Osmosis Square, one of the main squares in the centre of Athens. The area around the hotel is rather rundown, but the hotel itself is fine and very reasonably priced. We'd stay there again.
