I always stay in the Plaka, usually at the Hotel Acropolis House in Kodrou Street but this time I thought I would try the Hotel Adonis directly opposite. Suffice it to say that I will be reverting to my tried and trusted friend Acropolis House…
Everything about this hotel got my back up. It was €70 for a tiny, dark, viewless room with the smallest shower room I have ever seen. Breakfast was dreary with cereal, bread and instant coffee with long life milk. I was on a carb free diet - when I asked if there wasn’t something else other than bread (meaning fruit or something like that), they offered me cake. Call me Marie Antoinette - it gave the concept of “let them eat cake” an entirely new dimension…!
The breakfast area has a lovely view facing on to the Acropolis. As I entered there were a number of empty tables each with four chairs and each more or less the same size. I had no sooner settled myself down when I was asked to move to another table which, to the uninitiated, looked exactly the same size with the same number of chairs…go figure as our American cousins would say! Not the end of the world but it all just added to my feeling of annoyance and irritation.
My pet hate is indifferent service and this hotel had it by the bucket load. Not EVEN rude if you know what I mean…they just didn’t care at all. My lock didn’t work, there was no aircon – yes, it was all eventually sorted out but without so much as an apology. Returning to the hotel in the evening I had become used to a friendly greeting and a smile – not here. I will not be staying at this hotel again.
