“Not quite what we hoped for”

We made Apollonia our home base for 2 weeks. Now, before I go in to the negatives, let me first say this. The property is in a very nice suburb where we had no safety comcerns. I even walked without my husband to the grocery one evening with no worry. The staff is kind and helpful (especially taking in to consideration the overall customer service we encountered in the country), We had clean towels and turndown daily. The property, though old and a bit run down, was clean. Now the negatives... The first week, we listened to a dog bark nonstop, he finally stopped, but then we got to hear breeding cats. The property was the most run down in the area. The kitchenette could have used a little more cooking utensils, but we did make a couple modest meals. The bathroom is very small and the door opens in, making it very cramped. The tubs are deep, but narrow. My 6' hubby had a miserable time showering, and the curtain sucked in and stuck to you. I'm small, so I just gave up and took bubble baths. At least there were individual water heaters on the showers so we always had hot water. Yes, there are Mosquitos, and they are carnivores. The walls are very thin, you hear everything! It's very dark in the lobby and stair areas. The bar is staffed by the front desk person, so she is running back and forth, and you have to track her down to get another drink. The location is probably nicer in the summer, it's a short walk to the beach. Varkiza as a whole is a sleepy town. As a couple in our 30's, we were hoping to find more night life. So, not great, but not horrible. Don't expect luxury though... The stars are only based on amenities they offer, not quality.

“Not a 4 star hotel - at best a 2 star!!!”

At 90 Euros for a one bedroom apartment it is way overpriced. Anybody rating this accommodation above 2 star is misleading other travellers. It is very dated and in need of refurbishment. Flushing the toilet was a problem, several lighting switches were faulty with loose light fittings on walls, exposing wires. No hot water for 3 days. These problems were reported however the response was very poor. It is about a 15 minute walk to the very average tavernas and the pay beach a further 5 minute walk. Unless you want to see relatives in this area Varkiza has little to offer.

“no, no, no”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2010

This is an apartment not a hotel. If I wanted to spend a night in the slums I would have stayed in Omonia. I booked it, looked at the rooms and ran. I can't believe that this is rated a 4 star, that is false. I would have rather paid the extra hundred somewhere else than stayed here with one eye open.

“Not all bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

Having read previous reviews, I was very skeptical about booking to stay at the Apollonia Hotel Apartments but as we were traveling on a very tight budget, we didn't really have much choice as to where we could stay so we decided to take a risk with this one. We stayed 3 nights, and I am happy to report that the place wasn't all bad. If you want to visit central Athens, then it is not ideal as the hotel is located approximately 30 minutes drive from the city centre but if you are looking for a coastal holiday then the location is great. The hotel is in a quiet residential area and is a 10 minute walk from the main strip where there are some nice restaurants, a nice bakery and a nice beach. The place is dated and basic and could do with an overall refurbishment, but the pool was nice and the reception staff helpful with booking taxis and telling us how to get to different places. Didn't come across any mosquitoes until the last night when I did get bitten in my sleep which was really annoying.
So if you need to stay somewhere and you are on a budget then I would say go for this place, but if you are looking for any sort of luxury then definatly look elsewhere.

“Not that great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2010

I stayed at this hotel whilst waiting for an international flight. Firstly, there is no particularly good reason to go to this area. The beach and waterfront is pleasant enough but not really worth the effort. The hotel room was not very well lit, and seemed to be very old and dated. The shower was so hot you could barely use it. There were a multitude of mosquitos in my room which stopped me from sleeping. The pool area is quite nice, and the breakfast was pretty good. A five euro taxi ride to the bus stop and a 30 minute bus ride which wasn't too bad.
