“Basic Hotel, Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

Although the Jason Inn is a very basic hotel, we would recomend it because of its superb location, especially if you have limited time in Athens. As you exit the hotel, there is a small brick church about 150 yards to your left. Head towards the church, then bear right when you reach it. The beginning of the Plaka will be to your left, and the pedestrian street leading to the Acropolis will be straight ahead.

One thing to note, the hotel restaurant, with its superb view of the Acropolis, closes for the season at the end of October. We stayed there in November, and the lack of a restaurant meant we did not get dinner the night we arrived. We could have gone to the Plaka, but did not know where it was until we had a chance to explore the next morning.

“Great location, good breakfast, basic rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

This hotel's main selling point is its location, a short walk from the main tourist sites, and off the main road.

Our room was small but adequate, wi-fi was OK but slow, the view from the balcony (on the Acropolis) was great. Noise from the street was moderate.

On the minus side, the bathroom was very cramped, and the shower curtain was useless - disecting the cubicle rather than surrounding it - meaning you have to crouch down to avoid soaking the bathroom. The corridors smell strongly of disinfectant (but at least they keep the place clean I suppose).

Hotel staff were very helpful with advice and directions. The breakfast is surprisingly good for a hotel of this quality - nice to see bacon and eggs, but a shame not to see half-decent orange juice.

At the time of visiting (November 2011) the nearest metro, Thissio, is almost useless because of a closed line (and with the current situation I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to re-open), so in practice the hotel is a good 10 minutes' walk from the nearest useful metro (Monastiraki) along a bustling and crowded street. So worth bearing that in mind if you have lots of luggage.

All in all, I would visit this place again because of the convenience. But at 60 euros for a basic double, I wouldn't call it particularly good value.

Room Tip: The higher up the better, to get away from the street noise and for better views.

“On the edge of the Plaka, handy metro station, great breakfast & views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

The Jason Inn has three main advantages over most Athens hotels.

1) Location. When looking for a good value property, be it a house or a hotel, one axiom is look on the edge of a good area. The Jason Inn fits this bill perfectly, being just on the edge of the most expensive hotel area of all - the Plaka. Located towards the South-West end of Asomaton, The Jason Inn is located among the second hand furniture shops in historic Thiseio and just 100m from Ermou street which forms the Northern border of the Plaka. A further 50m takes you to pedestrianised Adrianou, one of the main arteries of the Plaka stuffed with junk shops, cafes and bars. There are numerous eating places and shops within 2 minutes walk towards Ermou.

A ten minute walk down Adrianou will take you to or from the Monastiraki metro station with a direct connection to the airport (40 mins, €8, every 30 mins, www.ametro.gr). Allow a few minutes to look around the unearthed vaulted waterways on display in Monistraki metro station. Thiseio metro station, with a direct connection to Pireaus (20 mins, €1.40, every 4-15 mins, www.isap.gr) is even closer, just beyond the end of Asomaton, at around 4 minutes walk from the doors of the hotel. Coming from the airport, it would make sense to change at Monatiraki and take line 1 (overground) one stop to Thiseio station. The other way, you should check the line 3 timetable to the airport to ensure a good connection, or simply walk down Adrianou to the Monastiraki station.

2) Views. The Jason Inn has a surprisingly large roof-terrace bar with stunning views of the Acropolis and nearby Ancient Agora. Looking at nearer buildings, it is quite shocking how dilapidated more modern Athenian buildings are away from their street frontages. Either way and whatever your interest, there is plenty to see from the roof terrace. This is also where breakfast is served (6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m).

3) Breakfast. Breakfast is a superb self service buffet with bacon, scrambled eggs, breads, preserves, butter, honey, salads, strained yogurt, fresh coffee, choice of teas, fruit juices. Help yourself and make a morning of it! This is the best breakfast I have ever had in a Greek hotel.

General
The reception of the hotel is smart and staffed 24 hours by helpful and experienced personnel. Besides the free wi-fi mentioned on the hotel's website, there is a solitary and rather slow PC available for guest use free of charge, connected to the internet and a laser printer. This is particularly appreciated if you are travelling without your net device.

On the downside, the remainder of the hotel is not quite so smart and in particular the rooms are on the small side and average in quality at best. Towels and basic toiletries are provided. There is a minibar stocked with soft drinks, beer, wine and nibbles at the usual minibar prices. These however are nothing compared to the exorbitant costs of drinking in the rooftop bar, which, apart from the views as mentioned above, is rather basic. My advice would be see the roof top views early on then head out to the lively bars and tavernas around the corner of Ermou.

Finally, the Jason Inn has a rather eccentric lift (elevator) rising from just inside the main entrance doors. It is oblong in plan and has two doors opening from the opposite diagonals. When you step in, you probably won't notice the other door and wonder why the door doesn't open on your floor. I am sure now you have read this, you won't be caught out as we were.

We paid 66 GBP for a twin room with breakfast in early October, 2011 via Hotels4U.com. The rack rate for this room was 110 Euros without breakfast so best to shop around and book in advance. At this price and relative to the rates in Athens, We would certainly return again based upon location alone and especially for that breakfast with one of the best backdrops in the World.

Tim Millea.

Room Tip: The lower floors at the front suffer badly from 24 hrs traffic on Asomaton street. If you are a ligh...

The Hotel is well located, close from wonderful attractions, from restaurants and an amazing view from the roof restaurant/bar. The metro line is less than 10 minutes walk & 5 minutes walk to taxi park. Police officers are always around
The area is safe, I walked at different times of the day, but alwaya felt safe.
Breakfast was good and some staff really friendly.
Easy access... it was worth it to stay there.
