“Candia Hotel is ok, nothing bad”

We have stayed at Candia Hotel in Athens January, 1-7, 2012. It is a nice economy class hotel. Good location, 1 minute walk from Metaxurgio metro station. 2-3 stops - and you are by Acropolis. We bought 1 week metro ticket for 14 euros. Nothing bad about the hotel. Very modest breakfast but it is a cheap place, not Ritz-Carlton! Nice old-style coffee pot for those who want to make real greek coffee... Very friendly people. I found the area around safe enough. Eventhough there is a bus station for Albanians close by where they pick up a coach to go to Tirana (25 Euros round trip). Day and night there is Albanian crowd waiting for their bus. You go through and that's it. I liked everything about the hotel, modest clean rooms, simple furniture, bathroom is ok. Athens itself and the area around the hotel seemed OK, nothing dangerous, no aged prostitutes, no drug dealers as it said in one of the stupid guide books. I have no idea why certain people wrote such a terrible impressions about this hotel.

“Diamond in The Rough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I have stayed in this hotel a few times as it is in the perfect spot for the train and metro for the airport. The rooms I stayed in (from 2010 onwrads) have been modern, simple decor. Some have new bathrooms, others have been older, but in a clean and unbroken condition. The rooms have internet connection and views of athens (I have in one room enjoyed a view of the Parthenon in the distance, other times overlooking the old station which is a beautiful building.)

The breakfast there is really good. A great choice of hot drinks, and a very rich american breakfast.

The only downside is the area where the hotel is situated, although it is preferable to Omonia, you still need to be on guard at night time. The reception staff are well aware of this and advised us to take care and only take the minimum cash etc out with us. Last time I went with my partner and we went to a taverna recommended by the staff for an evening meal, but when I have been by myself, they have assisted me in ordering a delivery take-away which I could take to my room.

I cannot recommend this hotel enough and would advise anyone visiting athens to stay here.

“Nice price, friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

We stayed three nights in this hotel in Athens, and we received good value for our money. The staff was friendly, the breakfast buffet was good, and the hotel was located only a ten minute taxi-trip from Syntagma, the heart of Athens. The room was quite small, but we had a big balcony which gave us a good wiev over the city. However, the wake up call-system was not good enough. The hotel had no automatic wake up call, so the person at the front desk was supposed to call each room. The first morning, we received the call 30 minutes after agreed time, the next morning the receptionist forgot it. But our overall impression of this hotel was OK, regarding the price we paid.

“Good hotel but bad neighbourhood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

My friend and i recently travelled to Athens as part of a tour group. We stayed at the Candia Hotel for a night and although the area around the motel looked a little rough, the hotel itself was nice. The staff were friendly and the rooms were adequate. My friend unfortunately got her bag stolen right out the front of the hotel. The staff at the Candia responded extremely well and tried to help us wherever possible. We appriciated their eagerness in a city that was very disappointing in the same situation. Just watch your belongings around this place.

“Only stay here if you don't mind next door sneeking a peek at you in the shower!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

Arrived at the Candia and first impressions were good, reception was clean and fairly modern (we were probably just glad to be inside and off of the grotty streets of Athens!)
The elevators were, an experience, very small and can only fit a few people in at a time, and if you try and cram an extra person in then you'll face a telling off by reception!

The rooms were basic, but not terrible. Our balcony was quite large compared to others in our group who's could be no more than a foot in width, yet about 6 foot long, not sure who they were expecting to be able to fit down there! The balconys were dirty and not somewhere you would want to sit and relax, the noise from the traffic was incredible! It was so loud that we could never sit in our room with the door open. It was even really loud at night and the balcony doors barely kept the noise out.

Now, our bathroom.......there was a vent which was at eye level when standing in the bath, this vent looked directly into next doors shower! Meaning that when you have a shower, you are staring straight into next doors shower!!! This would be highly embarressing and awkward! We were lucky enough to be friends with the people next door so it wasn't as bad, although we all still made the decission to shower sitting down as to avoid watching next door doing the same. You could also hear everything that was going on in your neighbours bathroom which isn't pleasant...
The use of the safe in the room was free which was a bonus.

The area was horrible, grafitti everywhere, dog and cat dropppings, over flowing bins and pervy men, even the police would make inapropriate comments to the girls in the group.

The beds were rock hard too so even after a long day of sight-seeing, you couldn't relax in a comfy bed.

The roof terrace was the nicest part of the hotel, the pool was tiny though, it was probably just a bit bigger that a jakuzzi. It was lovely to watch the sunset up threre and there is a view of the Akropolis although it was obstructed by a crane.
