Well, where do I begin? Let me first start off by saying that the Oscar Inn wasn't terrible, and if you are looking for an inexpensive hotel and don't care about having all the frills, then it will probably be okay for you.
In the title of this article, I mentioned to not get this hotel confused with the Hotel Oscar. The Hotel Oscar and the Hotel Oscar Inn are owned by the same company, advertised on the same website, and are one block from each other, but are completely different. When we booked this hotel, the travel agency in Greece from which we purchased the rooms called it the "Hotel Oscar." We got on the internet, looked at the rooms on the website, and liked what we saw, so we booked the room for a great price. After all we were not going to be staying in our hotel room all day, so were not looking for it to be too extravagant. When we got there, they sent us down to the Oscar Inn. We did not know any better until we went to our room and saw that, although it was OK, it wasn't quite like what we saw on the website. It was clean and the bathroom was new, but it was too hot for us and we wanted to see what the Hotel Oscar looked like because that is the hotel we had booked and we wanted to check on "in-room" air conditioning.
When we tried to tell them at the front desk that we were booked for the Hotel Oscar and not the Oscar Inn, they informed me that they were the SAME hotel. I was told that because of the price I paid, I had to stay at this location (Oscar Inn). Then I told them that I would like to check the availablity at the Hotel Oscar. I was informed that they did not have anything available for me. Being a little suspicious about their answer, I took a different approach. My wife and I walked down the street to the Hotel Oscar, went to the desk clerk and told him that we would like to check vacancy and see what their rooms looked like because we might want to stay there a few nights. No problem! I was informed that they had several rooms open and was given the key to go and look at one that I could stay in. It was 300% better than the room at the Oscar Inn. The room was great, it had a private balcony, it was all very plush, and had a much nicer bathroom. So I walked back down and told the man at the front desk that I had bought a room through such-and-such travel agency and that I had been put at the Oscar Inn. I told him that I realized that my discount had unknowingly landed me in the cheaper hotel, but that I would like to upgrade and pay the difference. To my shock, the man told me that the two hotels were DIFFERENT (after the man at Oscar Inn said they were the same) and that I could not switch. I couldn't believe it. I reiterated to him that I was willing to help his hotel chain make an extra 150 euros off of me for the three nights. He would not budge, and I was informed that since I had paid for the room through the travel agency at a certain price, the only way I could stay at the nicer Hotel Oscar was to pay for it in full while also losing my money on the Oscar Inn. I wasn't willing to pay that much. So, even though I was willing to pay them the difference for the upgrade, I ended up being forced to stay at the Oscar Inn. I have never experienced anything like this.
So, since I had to stay there, let me give you my review of the Oscar Inn....
The building was older, and the halls and bedrooms showed its age, but the room was clean. The room was also larger than the other European rooms we had stayed in and had two double beds. For the third time on our trip (first London, then Paris) we had been told that the hotel had air conditioning, but were disappointed. The hotel actually does have air conditioning (just like the other ones), it's just that they turn it on some time in late May (just like the other ones) which isn't very good when you are in Athens in early May and the temperature is in the 80's.
The bathroom was clean and more up to date than the room itself. But the bathtub was ridiculously small and really only good for standing up in and taking showers. The problem was that the shower, which was one of those hand held kind that you can take off the wall, was not hooked to the wall in the first place. So the only way to take a shower is to stand up in the bathtub, bend down, grab the hand held and proceed to wash yourself. Not too hard, right? Well, the next problem is that there is no shower door or curtain. So, while you are showering with this hand held shower, your water is splashing all over the bathroom (if you are not careful). Once again, the bathroom itself was brand new and was completely ceramic tile, so taking a shower just meant one of your towels was going to be used as a mop. At least your wet bathroom is a "nice" wet bathroom.
On a more positive note, the front desk man that we dealt with was very pleasant, and there was a little desk with a computer in one part of the lobby which they let us use for free to get on the internet. Also, the breakfast was very good. Another positive thing is that the hotel is only one block from (2 minute walk) from the metro station (the metro entrance/exit acutally comes out right in front of the nicer Hotel Oscar).
So, since I am going to be objective about the Oscar Inn itself as if I had never seen the other nicer one, I would say the following: If you are looking for something inexpensive and clean with a nice breakfast and near public transportation, and you don't mind it having a little age to it since you won't be doing anything but sleeping there, then the Oscar Inn is not a bad choice. If you want something a little nicer and are willing to pay a little more, then MAKE SURE you ask for the "Hotel Oscar" and not the Oscar Inn.
