We had a two night stay in Athens before departing on a cruise. Originally, we booked an apartment through VRBO.com. However, this turned out to be a disaster! The place was filthy, broken air conditioning, non-working toilet; you get the picture. Not the kind of place you wanted to stay for an anniversary trip. I went online to Priceline and won a bid for the Athens Ledra Marriott. We told the landlord we were leaving and caught a cab to the Marriott.
What a pleasure it was! The Marriott is located a bit out of the middle of things, but I know how to take a cab! It also offers a free shuttle service to Syntagma Square and back. However, if you want to get to the Acropolis early before the crowds, I highly recommend you skip the shuttle and take a cab.
If you have stayed in a Marriott at the States, you know what the rooms look like. This one was spotless, quite large, beautiful bathroom and nice amenities. The air conditioning worked great, and the staff was friendly and helpful. We did not find our room particularly noisy and could not hear any noise from adjacent rooms.
We loved the rooftop bar/restaurant. Absolutely beautiful view of the Acropolis and we actually ate there both nights as it was so hot when we were there, by the end of the day we had no energy left to go exploring. Enjoyed the food very much and did not find it overpriced for the area. We did not use the pool, but it looked clean and others seemed to be enjoying their swim.
In the morning, there's a large Starbucks right down the street if you need your coffee fix, and we always do! There's a bar in the lobby where you may order food. I don't recommend their Monte Cristo Sandwich; it was really an unusual presentation, and not in a good way.
Overall a very pleasant stay, and a very good value, considering what we paid for the room on Priceline. I have no plans to return to Athens, but would certainly consider the Marriott if I did.
