“Great Place to Stay in Athens!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

My husband and I stayed in Athens for a couple nights last August 2011, and I wanted a place within walking distance to the Acropolis and the Plaka, but for a reasonable price. We got what I hoped for and more at Hotel Tony. This was our first visit to Athens, so we were rather confused by the streets. We drove around in circles a few times having a hard time finding the hotel, so eventual my husband parked the car and I got out to hopefully find it on foot. I turned the corner and Tony was standing outside his hotel, and it great English he asked, "are you looking for Hotel Tony?" I'm really glad he was there to greet us!

The hotel is hidden a bit amongst the apartments in the area, but I found it to be a really nice, safe neighbourhood. A couple other hotels in the area, but mostly residential. But be warned, don't ever leave ANYTHING in your car in Athens, in any neighbourhood! We were with a group with three cars and we decided to visit the acropolis, but all of our luggage was in the cars. One of the cars was broken into and everything except for a towel was stolen. This is in a really nice residential area close to the acropolis. From what I hear, this happens in any part of Athens. Just be aware of it.

The hotel itself was really nice, clean, and modern. There was also air conditioning, which was much needed in August! We also had our own private (big) balcony where we sat at the cute bistro table and ate breakfast. I loved the marble stairway up to the rooms. There is also a small elevator for carrying luggage up and down. Tony's son was really helpful and brought all of our luggage to our room for us. All with a big smile. Bonus: this was one of the few places we could flush toilet paper in Greece! ha ha

If we are ever in Athens, we will definitely be staying at Hotel Tony again. Highly recommend it!

“Best hotel ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This hotel was one the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The room was big, comfortable and cozy. Location is great and is the reason we picked it. I would say a 5 minute walk to the metro. Tony is the best host and the driver that picked us up from the airport was a very nice and friendly guy. He gave a little tour as we made our way to the hotel. Only complaint (if I have to say it) was that the bathroom door was a little loud, it was hard to shut. That's it! The hotel offers free wifi and it actually works (some hotel wifi doesn't work no matter what you do). Would go back to this hotel for sure.

My husband and I chose Hotel Tony based on reviews from Rick Steves. The rooms were clean, within walking distance of all the major sites, and reasonably priced. The owner Tony was very friendly and helpful.

“Realy good stay here.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Located in a safe part of town, the neighborhood is on the side hill leading up to Filopappou Hill. The staff here is very good in person. The owner, Tony and his son are very helpful and run a very nice little hotel. It is about a 7 min walk from the Metro Station Syngrou-Fix (http://www.ametro.gr/) so it was very convenient to get around the city. You can walk about 10 min. east and be at the entrance to the Acropolis. I loved the location and my room.

My Rick Steves guide recommended this hotel. The hotel room was clean, had a sink, microwave, refrigerator, tile bathroom, wireless internet (that worked). The cool part was being able to store and warm up leftovers in my room! I asked Tony how he could keep his prices so reasonable and he folded his hands behind his back and with a little bow said "all you get in the big fancy hotels is a man at the door standing like this to greet you when you walk into a big fancy lobby. I don't do that here!" I laughed hard at this one. He is right, you don't get that here but you do get a very good room.

All in all, a very good spot and a very good space. I would recommend it to others without hesitation.

Room Tip: My room was in the back part of the building and was very quiet! The owner told me he actually live...

“Great way to start an Athens visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I chose Hotel Tony, like most people here, on the basis of the reviews. I must admit that I was a bit leery on the way there. We ended up walking further than we needed to, (but that's another story..)! On our venture up the hill to get to the hotel all I could think was, "oh noooo, this can't be right." There is a lot of grafitti (which I later learned is pretty prevalent), the street we were on just looked pretty sketchy. So, when we arrived I was more than a bit concerned.

We arrive in Athens at about 8:30 am, after a long flight, not sleeping...and went immediately to the train/tram station; paid our 8 euro pp fare and off to downtown Athens (on the blue line) - Syntagma square or the heart of the city (took about an hour...the train was packed by the time we got off). We then boarded the red line, south to Singrou Fix station and found the absolutely worst way to cross a busy street to climb a steep street to Tony's Hotel, but it really wasn't that bad, once the wheezing was over.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by Tony, a nice friendly guy, who greeted us with a smile. Since we had to wait a bit for our room (it was about 11:30 am) we chatted with him about where to go, what to see and restaurants that we HAD to eat at....we almost immediately forgot all that stuff, which is pretty typical for us. After checking in and dropping our stuff in the very clean (but small) and modern (and very small) efficiency flat (and a small one at that)...with a (you guessed it) very small bathroom (no shower curtain...if there would have been one there, it would have been (very) small, we headed for the Acropolis area...actually Filopappau Hill to walk about a bit since we had been sitting for the last 247 hours and we didn't feel a bit tired.

After a pleasant, short walk we stopped for lunch in a modern restaurant (Dionysos Zonars, caters to tourists, but we got there between buses) and ordered a club sandwich (smartly sharing) and a Mythos beer (half liter of ice cold heaven). We then walked a short distance to the New Acropolis Museum and managed to get through most of it before we both started dragging (falling asleep during one of the short videos ... apparently we were snoring in Greek and offending the locals). Back to the hotel for a nap and a shower. Later, we bought a bottle of wine (the first of many, many bottles at a grocery store just a few short blocks away) and went back up Filopappau Hills to watch the sunset on the Acropolis...a lovely site.

Then we found a very nice restaurant (Filistron) with a table on the roof tops and had an alright dinner (veal & mousakka) while gazing at the well-lit Acropolis...very nice. We then raced'ish back to the hotel room, and hit the sack at 9:30 pm local...dead asleep by 9:32, maybe sooner.

Once we figured out the transit system, it was definitely an easy place to get from here to there. All in all, a good place to stay with helpful people!

Room Tip: Try to get a balcony room
