very good location, breakfast buffet very well, excellent public areas. right on the beach and with a very good outdoor swimming pool and gardens. really near to Oporto and 10 minutes walk to the local Casino.

We stayed at the Axis Vermeer as part of a group on half board tarrif. The breakfast buffet was standard fare with little or no flair. The evening buffet was basic, a selection of salads and cold meats for starter and a choice of a meat or fish dish for main course. It wasn't bad but could under no circumstances be called good.

The location close to the beach was good but the surrounding area was predominately new build high rise which wasn't inspiring.

The hotel is geared towards large groups so avoid it if you are a looking for a romantic weekend away or if you are a solo traveller.

Although we were there at the beginning of October things in the hotel seemed to have "shut up shop". The heating in the pool and the air conditioning in the public areas was switched off (couldn't tell in our room because it was always hot despite the A/C apparently being repaired) on 6th October even though the temperature was in the low 30s, when we complained we were told it was the end of the season. This made the pool vitually unusable and the lounge area very uncomfortable for a post dinner drink.
The food was dreadful, we managed for breakfast but gave up on the evening meal and ate out eventually, at very reasonably priced restaurants.
The staff seemed out of their depth and poorly trained, hence some poor devil being given a key to our room and entering our room while my husband was dressed only in his skin (don't know who was more surprised). The staff in the restaurant were uncommunicative and didn't seem to have system in place for clearing or resetting tables, when a table was found it often hadn't been laid correctly, something was always missing.
The hotel also seem to be running a scam involving rooms with balconies, initially eveyone on our tour was given a room without a balcony (they're very small, dark and depressing), when you complain at reception an upgrade is offered but at an extra cost and the reception staff seemed to have told everyone who did this that they had just managed to get the last balcony room. It was pretty obvious after 8 days that most of the balcony rooms were empty.
We went with Newmarket, the tour guides were hit and miss, didn't do any guiding when the destination was reached just went off by themselves to eat and shop.
Wouldn't go back again or use Newmarket.

Hotel rooms & public areas very good excellent sea views.The main let down was the food it was cold unappetising & when on holiday it is nice to be waited on not to have to get every course from a buffet.It seemed like a motorway servery food often ran out & very crowded to get at the servery very disappointing !
