“Bargain Hotel. Get what you pay for. Fine if you don't expect the Ritz.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2009

Booked through hostelbookers for 30 Euro per night for a private double ensuite, so didn't expect anything spactacular. If you go with no high expectations, you will probably enjoy your stay more than some of the other reveiwers appear to have done so.
Our room was basic, but it was clean. (And I am very fussy about this.) The decour of our room and the hotel as an entirety is outdated and a bit mismatched, but you are paying pittence, so can't really expect anything else.

The place has a cat and allows pets, so if you have allergies perhaps maybe consider something else. However, I have fur allergies and didn't suffer during my stay, so I am pretty sure they are allocated to specific rooms only.

Reception are helpful with booking trips. One of the girls has excellent English, the others very minimal. But to be honest Porto doesn't seem to have many fluent English speakers. I am one to hold the opinion that you shouldn't assume every country to speak perfect english however, so just take what comes and keep your Portugese dictionary close to hand and you will be fine.

All in all, it is very cheap. We didn't have breakfast but it was only 2 Euros per person each day. The intenet is free for the first 30 minutes and 50 cents per 30 minutes there after.

DIRECTIONS: Im not sure on where else this hotel can be booked, but the directions we got from hostelbookers were really not very helpful. The easiest way to the hotel from the airport is the bus. It takes around 50 minutes and is around 2 Euros each. Take the 601 or 602 and get off at the last stop Cordoaria. As soon as getting out of the bus continue to walk straight in the direction the bus was going. (Currently there is a Darwin expedition in the massive old building on the left hand side. On the right hand side you will see an old steeple) After a couple of minutes you will be in Gomes Teixeira Square (It has a fountain with lions in the middle.) Look to the left and you will see 2 churches standing side by side (Beautiful ones) Walk down the road running down the side of these churches into Carlos Alberto Square. Walk straight across to the little alley like road on the left which is full of shops (you can't miss it.) It has no road sign but this is Cedofeita Street. You will find Pensão Estoril on the left side after about a 5 minute walk, number 193.) It all sounds very complex but it isn't and takes about 10 minutes from that bus stop.

TIPS ON PORTO: Not very vegetarian friendly. And despite misleading chains in the UK, not big fans of chicken. If you love your seafood Porto is for you! The menus normally are one page long and the sub-headings are Starters, Meat (no chicken, usually pork and beef), Fish and Desserts.
Best way to get around and to see all the sites is via the tour buses (very touristy yes, but helpful as there is a stop near to the hotel and provides excellent transportation with the hop on, hop off service.) We used the red city siteseeing company which was 13 Euros per person for 48 hours.

Absolutely awful! Smelt terrible, dirty, up two flights of stairs, no English Speaking staff. Room was so dirty we went straight out to buy cleaning products which were taken from our room the next morning! Breakfast was a roll and one sachet of jam! When we asked if they could call us a taxi, they said no! Unbelievable place above a dodgy old jewellers! Nowhere near anywhere nice!

“Not exactly a bargain”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2007

I stayed here with a friend on our first night of a trip around Portugal. Our room had no window apart from a tiny skylight, it was quite old-fashioned and the en-suite was a partitioned off section of the room, with a plastic sliding door. It was a bit odd, and the plastic front/door didn't even extend to the ceiling, so it was just as though the bathroom was in the room itself! It was ok, but we stayed in much better places than this for the same price or less on our trip. Also, it's completely out of the action. The directions we were given for arrival were awful, we got lost & were wandering the streets at night until some locals took pity on us and helped us out!

  • Disliked — the bizarre bathroom!

“Clean but odd!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2007

When we arrived to this strange little B&B there was no one on reception and when the lady arrived she didn't communicate in English as we had hoped but sign language instead! We seemed to understand eachother perfectly anyway and she directed us to a 3 bed room (although we had booked a twin bed). There are only stairs so we had to lug our bags up several floors. The locking mechanism on the room door was not as safe as it could have been. However the room was very clean and pleasant, with a small balcony overlooking a terrace. The TV was in full working order. The en suite was a little odd - a perspex box in the corner of our room with a toilet, sink and shower inside! But it worked and did the job for us! It was fine for a cheap and decent nights sleep.

“Remind yourself, it's cheap”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2005

The Estoril (-----------------------) was only EURO 28 per night - and we reminded ourselves of that during our Feb 05 stay. It's in an older building above a shop in a (supposedly) pedestrianised shopping strip. There are only stairs - we had to lug our bags up two big flights.

Former (presumably larger) rooms/apartments have been divided into strange shapes in the current pension. Ours was a reversed "L", with our double bed at the foot and a single bed in the stalk, with the only window at the end. It was clean but the furniture was pretty basic. The bathroom was in the corner and clean, but small and also basic - a rectangle surrounded by a partition.

Because the (new) walls are not all that solid, we had cigarette smoke wafting into our room during the night. Also, our TV didn't work. Although breakfast was officially available, the hostess didn't seem interested in providing it and encouraged us to use the cafe next door. Otherwise she was friendly enough, but not particularly helpful. The location was good - just outside the centre of town - a 10/15 minute walk to Sao Bento station, for instance.

The Estoril is recommended in a number of guidebooks and, frankly, I was surprised. Maybe it compares well to other accommodation in Porto - everything's relative. It was clean, seemingly safe and cheap - and for three nights that was OK for us.
