I did not think that this was a very good hotel. I certainly didn't think it was a five-star hotel. We arrived and had lunch. The lunch buffet is reasonably priced.
The rooms were really so-so. I preferred a double bed to 2 beds pushed together but they couldn't accommodate me on that. So we went to our room. The safe is ancient and quite hard to use. My parents got their things locked in and had to call a bellman to help them get them out.
The room was clean and the bathroom was OK but a little dingy, old carpeting and 70s style wicker furniture, not exactly the best. The professional photos of the rooms that you see on tripadvisor or elsewhere are of the upgraded rooms, which cost between 20 and 40 euros extra. My parents had one of those. It was indeed nicer.
In any event the real kicker was in the middle of the night... there was some kind of plumbing problem on our floor and when we returned our room smelled like sewage! I went downstairs to complain and this is when the hotel truly showed itself to not be a five-star operation. First they moved me to a room with separated twin beds. Then they tried to give me a smoking room. Only on the third attempt did they give me a room with a double bed that did not smell like sewage and was similar to what I had asked for/had paid for. A real five-star hotel would probably give you an upgrade if you returned to your room late at night and the place was smelling like a toilet, but at this place they actually tried to downgrade you and see if you didn't complain. I was really not impressed. The front desk man was very rude about the whole thing; he didn't seem to think I should have a problem sleeping somewhere with an awful smell like that. In any case, I was no impressed.
I will say that the breakfast is very good. The pool was quite small but probably fun for kids to play in. Not big enough to swim for exercise.
Be warned that the hotel is located in the financial district, not close to the tourist sights of Porto at all.
I would have given this hotel a higher rating, but what really got me was that they bil themselves as a five-star; they are most certainly not a five-star, and I think they should be penalized for engaging in what is basically false advertising.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your review and your contribution to our improvement program.
Our clients remarks are the real engine to keep us improving and provide our guests with the best possible service.
Let me just take the liberty to add some information regarding the location. HF Ipanema Park is distanced from Oporto old town about 4 km and from the beach around 2 km, however we have public transportations just in front of the hotel and also, for those who love to ride and would like to know the city with a different perspective, we rent bikes. Next time, give it a try and you'll be delighted with the things you'll find about OPORTO.
We look forward to your next visit!
