I stayed in the hotel for one night in January. The location is good, being at the top of the historic area of Porto. It's quite a mixture of modern and old, but I'm not sure if it works (plastic seats and LED chandeliers, with a 1900's lift). The room was on the cosy side of small and the bathroom was quite old and in need of updating.

Beautiful restored facility with a shortage of staff to make it perfect. Rough around the edges best describes the hotel. Stunningly decorated but the lack of constant maintenance shows with paint chips and dirty mirrors. Skip the breakfast as the few hard working people there can not possibly keep up with the demands of the guests. Seems to me management was missing. The front desk is equally understaffed. For me this was a disappointing SLH property, not up to there usual standards of service.

This hotel was a huge disappointment! We stayed at another hotel managed by the same company in Coimbra which was much better, Quinta das Lagrimas. Nothing seemed to work properly, from the elevator to the showers. The showers were so complicated to turn on in one of the rooms that we had to have room service come and do it for us. The rooms were extremely hot. Beds were small, not as we had reserved, so we were given new rooms after complaining. Reception also booked us under the wrong room and did not offer us the sized beds we had ordered. Sleeping was also difficult since walls very thin and you can hear conversations next door. Conclusion, hotel needs to be refurbished and have stronger management.

I love this hotel.. It's old world, the surroundings are authentic and fascinating. The service is top class and friendly and the beds are very comfortable. This is a five star from a different era. I have read some of the reviews with surprise and If it's a flaw to maintain the old bathrooms and the odd lift (elevator) this is not the hotel for you. There is too much to see and notice in this hotel to list here but the furnishings, stained glass, wrought iron atrium mixed with some contemporary and art deco is a combination worth preserving. The bathrooms are an insight into mid 20th century design and although the shower sometimes wets the floor and it's not the brightest it's these quirks that make it so interesting and enjoyable. The location is superb with access to the old town and within easy reach of the metro (which provides great access also) Valet parking is available for a reasonable fee. I would highly recommend this hotel for those who want something different.. Fabulous..Love it.. The front desk were also very helpful recommending restaurants and tours. A private tour with and English speaking guide (in his new mercedes) was only 75 Euro for 3.5 hours which included a Port tasting and a great insight into what Porto had to offer. The "Book" restaurant around the corner was exceptional.. I have to go back three days was not enough..
