“Excellent Experience, Incredibly Happy”

It would be impossible to write a review that was too glowing about Guest House Douro. Everything was first rate, and the attention to detail (both in the physical accommodations and their attention to guests) is unrivaled in my experience (restricted to B&Bs that is!).

Honestly, the 100s of other reviews speak for themselves, and there is no point reinventing the wheel, but if you stay here you won't regret it. The location is superb, the breakfasts are gourmet, and the place is immaculate; it is clear the bed and breakfast is a labor of love for the owners.

If you want certainty and no unpleasant surprises, I would highly recommend GHD.

“Wonderful first class service, top location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I confirm what other travelleres say about the fantastic service to guests, incredibly rich and healthy breakfast, spectacular views to the river !!! Hotel & Rooms are very small ( and pricey, lets admit it) but location is the best in town, space is perfectly used and nothing is missing! Our only critic is the breakfastroom, pitty that one can not enjoy natural light to wake up while enjoying breakfast, but I guess there was a choice to make (one more bedroom or that eating room half on the basement of the facade to the ribeira). Our stay was perfect and we thank C&J also for helping in making of my husbands birthday a perfect day, and evening! : Restaurant ODE, recomended by them, one of the best gastronomic experiences ever! In conclussion, a charming guesthouse where you'll feel like at home.
Ps- For anyone interested in bying Porto wines, we found good deals at a shop in the upper part of Rua Sao Joao.

“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Guest House Douro is a super hotel with first rate service from Carmen and Jao who really could not have been more hospitable - even a bottle of chamagne personally delivered by C and J at 23.45 on 31st December 2011, this was thorougly enjoyed whilst looking out onto a splendid view of the Douro. The room was very well thought out (small though) with a tiny balcony with a view which is second to none.

“Perfect Place in Porto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

I'm sure there are other nice places to stay in Porto, but I have absolutely no interest in any of them after staying at Guest House Douro. From the very first email communication I had with Carmen to the beautiful breakfasts they treated us with each morning, the incredible dinner recommendations and arrangements they made for us each evening (including the evening we left for the Douro Valley and had one of the best meals of our lives!) and even the little treats they brought to us while we were glued to the breakfast room TV watching the US Open like the crazy Americans we are, Carmen and Joao did everything we could possibly think of and more to make sure our stay in Porto was absolutely perfect. The Guest House itself is a beautiful example of doing something exactly right -- they took a small lodging house and made it magical by paying attention to every tiny detail to makes sure it was top-of-the line and truly special. I will absolutely be back to Guest House Douro, and until then, I will look forward to visiting the wonderful city of Porto and my new friends again.

“Enchanting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

The view from our room on the top floor of the Guest House Duoro was simply enchanting. We could have sat gazing out at the moonlit river for hours. The hotel is quite small, but everything is carefully thought out and exquisitely presented. All the staff are extremely caring and helpful. We loved the amazing fruit sculptures Joao presented at breakfast each morning. And the glass of port on arrival was a wonderful wecoming touch on a December night.
For anyone interested in a port tasting, try Kopke's chocolate and port offerings (not free) in their elegant showrooms on the other side of the river. The restaurant next door to Kopke's is also very good value.
If you're arriving by car, turn off the GPS and ring for directions. You'll save yourself a lot of aggravation on the higgledy piggledy roads!
