“A haven in the wonderful remote national park of NE Portugal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

Robert welcomed us to his beautifully converted house high in the hills, based in the small and charming village of Montezino. Our rooms were well appointed and comfortable. Meals are taken together - outside on our first 2 days, inside on the last - where you get to meet your fellow travellers: Dutch, Portuguese, English, Americans at the large shared tables.

Food is well prepared - ample breakfasts even though you're 22km from any shops (it seems) and 3 course dinners with wine. Like almost everywhere else we stayed internet is available (by cable, not wireless) and there is a lovely library area and PC on the light and airy top floor.

Both our children loved the Bechstein piano that Robert encourages people to play - a real added bonus for them (and I think for the others).

Robert is full of local knowledge and encouragement for activities: whether going over to the nearest Spanish town or driving the dirt tracks of the utterly deserted high hills above the Lost Lobster - we'd highly recommend both of these things and indeed drove the dirt tracks twice.

Overall a lovely place to stay that we'd recommend without reservation.

Room Tip: Families can have adjoining rooms with a shared bathroom

“Fantastic retreat in rustic setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2011

My part of 3 stayed here for four nights in early April, 2011. We did so in conjunction with a series of hikes situated in the Parque Natural de Montesihno (Natural Park of Montesinho). As far as I can tell, short of being from this remote area, your only chance of doing these hikes is via this hotel, which provides helpful (if not defnitively so) maps and guides for several beautiful and moderately challenging hikes. I was told that few Portuguese or other Europeans visit this area of Portugal, which is a shame because it is beautiful and relatively easy to access (via express bus from Porto or Lisbon).

But on to the hotel itself, which I guess might better be called a retreat or an inn, but is in fact extremely comfortable and pleasurable to stay at. The place was built upon the 300 year-old ruins of another structure, and is beautiful for its stone and beam craftsmanship, inicluding a lovely fireplace and an infinity pool. The rooms are large, and include flat screen TVs and cable high-speed internet. The beds are large (even by American standards) and comfortable. The bathrooms are nicely appointed - some include stand-up showers along with tubs.

I believe that most if not all guests include breakfast and dinner with their rooms (you wouldn't want to try and find your own meals in this remote setting, anyway). The owner Robert is a wonderful cook who enjoys using local ingredients to their utmost. Each meal seemed better than the next!

If you're looking for a memorable, off-the-beaten-track-of-Europe destination, it's hard to imagine a better choice. Oh, by the way, Robert provides wine with dinner, but other drinks are available at a reasonable cost. He also made us lunches to take on our hikes.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

We stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed ourselves. We walked in the mountains, visited local towns and ate and drank far too much. Robert is an excellent cook and every evening meal was a different delight and always of the highest quality.

The house conversion was fantastic - we would recommend a stay here whole heartedly.

“Beautifully converted granite house, lovely setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2010

I have stayed in many bed and breakfasts in Portugal. This is amongst the very best. it is a beautiful conversion of a granite village house, conserving many original features, in a lovely mountain village. They have bought the house opposite, and are converting the ground floor into a carpark below for guests (parking is currently available but limited) and accommodation for the family above - currently they also live in the Lagosta Perdida. Room design is to very tastful historic-top-hotel standard, furniture beautiful rustic craftsmanship. Accomplished tiling. Beds are extremely comfortalble. Library with books and dictionaries in various languages, guides and leaflets, children's playroom, computer for guests' use. Various sitting rooms. Sunny terrace for breakfast and dinner in nice weather, nice swimming pool. Breakfasts: very good fresh-squeezed orange, interesting selection of cereals, bowl of fruit. Good Sao Jorge cheese and another soft Portuguese cow cheese. Butter and jams not portion-controlled - good! Yoghurt including natural. Good teas, good coffee, espresso, capuccino! (Good hot drinks are not to be found at all breakfast tables in Portugal! Nor for some reason is good orange juice...) Mountains bikes, table tennis on patio. Attentive service. Nice walks. You could come here with children, for a weekend up from Porto, easily half an hour up from Braganza, or down from Galicia in Spain - it's 5km from the border. We stayed on the way through into Spain. They do evening food but we did not eat there - ate at Casa da Edra in the village - very good. I left feeling I wanted to come back, bringing my family.

“Marvelous getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2010

We spent one wonderful night in April at A Lagosta Perdida. We were touring northern Spain and decided to dip into Portugal for a night. We found this cozy inn on the Trip Advisor website, saw its perfect rating, and booked two rooms for ourselves and our teen-aged daughter. What a lovely surprise! The inn is located in a charming, working farm village in a national reserve area about 25 minutes north of Braganza. The building itself, a traditional village house/barn, has been beautifully renovated into a small inn with just a few rooms. I can't describe how delightful (for us, at least) it was to sit before a blazing fire in the sitting room while our daughter played their gorgeous Bechstein baby grand. Another sitting area offers satellite TV with English-language channels (a rarity in hotels in that area). We had booked the reasonably-priced dinner, and our wonderful host Robert presented us with a delicious 3-course meal featuring the Portuguese national dish, bacalhau -- dried cod cooked with with creamy scalloped potatoes. Our rooms were spacious, comfortable and rustically furnished, and the elegant modern bathroom provided guest robes.

A Lagosta Perdida is a perfect place to relax, get away from it all , stroll in the village or hike in the forests and moors. I wish we'd had more time to spend there!
