“one of the best preserved medieval towns / Braganca”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

The drive was long and tedious after several detours along the main highway on our way to Braganca. It was a worthwhile drive to this corner of Portugal. THe pousada was not well marked so we followed a nice family we met at the gas station to our accommodation for the next two evenings. It is a modern building but what is breathtaking is the view from the pousada as a whole and our window.... the walled medieval castle and old town ! with the rolling green hills that go for miles. Before I take you to the walled town, lets first explore the pousada. The staff were exceptionally helpful and chatty. Grab a cold glass of homemade and delicious lemonade ( no packaged contents, the real deal !) and have a chat about the history and Braganca . The rooms were appointed with clean linens and blankets, modern flair with comfort and cleanliness. Great views of the pool area and the castle !!!! The real show is at night when the castle is lit up with the walled city as the main subject. Meals were plentiful in the dining area with very helpful and friendly staff. Food was tasty and regional . A large common area was also available for guests to relax and soak in the view.
Exploring the town by foot is convenient and safe. THe walk up to the walled town was interesting and took a few foot bridges to get to. Once there, the views over to the pousada standing alone on a hilltop amongst the homes and hills is something to see! Braganca is not usually on the tourist trek but we went because of the history and the wild remoteness of the place. It was definitely worth coming to visit. We also found a cute little place for dinner in the town ( do walk around the center as its lovely ) Solar Bragancano... very old mansion in town with lots of plants , an inside garden ! and very accommodating owners.Good regional flavor filled food too ! Also, take a detour ( we had too, with the construction ! to Chaves... nice attractive historic center and bridge.OVerall, a nice place to visit and explore the area. ONce the highway is completed , it will be a much faster journey.

Room Tip: choose a room with a view overlooking the walled old city.Elevator access for elderlyor disabled gue...

“Calm and peaceful.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

We like to stay in Pousadas in order to get away from it all and this one did not disappoint. The minute you step inside out of the intense summer heat and are met by the exceptionally friendly receptionists, you feel relaxed.
Our bedroom was spacious and well appointed , with a large balcony overlooking the swimming pool and the castle. The excellent restaurant enjoys the same spectacular views and being out of town there is ample free parking in the hotel car park.
My only complaint is that the Internet should be free.

“Nice view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

We had been at the Pousada de Bragança some years ago when the Pousadas in Portugal were state owned. Now the Pousadas are private and owned by the Pestana Group and are relatively expensives.
This one isn't built in a historic building and after privatization the Pousada was enlarged and has more rooms in a new wing. Now they are not so exclusive as in the past, but this one still has a nice view to the Bragança Castle and to the twon itself. We didn't try the restaurant but in general the Pousadas still mantain a very good quality. About the breakfast was very good and we haven't any claim about it. I recomend the Pousada mainly because usually it means to be in the safe side.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write this review and for providing such useful comments.
The first Pousada opened in 1942, in Elvas, and since 2003, Pousadas have been managed by the Pestana Group.
We are glad you have had a pleasant stay and that you have appreciated the view from the Pousada and the breakfast service.
Thank you for your recommendation and we hope your next stay at Pousada de Bragança is as good as the last two,
Kind Regards

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011 via mobile

So they charge for Internet here which in this day and age where you are paying over 100 pound for a room is ludicrous. When I asked for assistance in picking a wine I was told no. we haven't eaten in the restaurant so cant comment. The rooms are quite large and do have good views but not worth the amount they ask for a room for a night.

Dear Guest,
We appreciate the time taken to write this review and we are disappointed to know we weren’t able to meet your expectations.
Your feedback on the internet charge is appreciated and we'll seriously consider your suggestion for improvement.
We truly apologize for the situation you have been through during your stay.
Nonetheless, we find the situation regarding the picking of a wine very unlikely to have happened. All members of the staff have a welcoming and respectful performance. They always try to help, solve every matter and provide the best experience to every guest.
Thank you for valuing the size and views of the rooms.
We hope you have enjoyed the city of Bragança and also hope that you can choose again Pousadas de Portugal,
Kind Regards

“A royal view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

My wife and I stayed at this hotel on the way from the Algarve to the UK ferry at Santander Spain. It is ideally placed close to the Spanish border in Northern Portugal. Currently there are long road works into Braganca, but a new dual carriageway should be completed sometime in 2012 (hopefully!!).
The hotel is quietly situated up a hill just 2 mins drive out of the town. This helped as it was extremely hot during our stay. The rooms all have a wonderful view over the castle. The castle is open to the public, except Mondays.
The rooms are spacious and reasonably appointed. As they face East there was no problem with the room getting too hot.
However where the hotel scores is with its restaurant. We had lunch there and despite the fact that the hotel was pretty empty, the (lady) chef did a fantastic job with the 'taster' menu. All the courses were excellent and we washed it down with lovely Portuguese white and red wines, available by the glass.
Breakfast was also good with a good buffet spread.
A word of warning - do not try the evening bar snacks. They are very expensive and very unadventurous. Our tasteless sandwich was made by the barman, not in the kitchen.

The castle is worth seeing, but the rest of the town is very run down. It has a great mediaeval heritage but the Portuguese state and local town seem to have just let it fall to rack and ruin.
Worth a stop off for a couple of nights to re-charge the batteries, then move onto Spain (a short beautiful drive over the local mountains through the national park). Visit the park if you have time. We didn't unfortunately.

Room Tip: All the doubles are similar and have a similar view.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for sharing such a useful review about Pousada de Bragança with Tripadvisor’s community.
We are glad you and your wife have had a pleasant stay and we value your nice comments on the location, the rooms, the breakfast and restaurant service. We have informed the chef about your feedback and it was truly appreciated.
Thank you also for mentioning the evening snacks, which will have their quality improved.
Near Bragança, one can visit Natural Park of Montesinho, and also the 2 River Beaches with Blue Flag at Albufeira do Azinho. Maybe next time you visit Portugal, you’ll be able to visit these places. We would certainly be delighted to welcome you again at Pousadas de Portugal,
Kind Regards
