My room (no, no chairs and table on the balcony as other reviews suggest) overlooked a building site. Everything was covered in dust the whole time. I was surprised to read other hotel reviews commenting on the soundproofing of the rooms. Given that I could hear the man in the next room to mine snoring all night long, as well as his use of the bathroom for all bodily functions, my view is that the soundproofing was non-existent. As to the 'spacious bathroom' that I'd read about - where was it? Certainly not in my room. Daily flooding of the bathroom when using the shower was the order of the day - this being the shower too where the wall fixing was almost off the wall so that the only way to use it was to hold the shower hose constantly. It would have been nice to have used the bar mentioned by some travelers, but none of us could find it; just a soft drinks dispenser. I wouldn't agree with reviews that indicated the room had 'excellent fixtures and fittings'. This small and very basic room had just that - basic fixtures and fittings with a bed that would accommodate 2 x 5 year old children, but not 2 fully grown adults. The male desk clerk was the only member of staff to attempt anything resembling customer service and I thank him for that. The blond female on duty couldn't be bothered, in our whole stay, to raise her head and acknowledge us when we said 'hello' or 'goodbye' to her. The only time we saw any animation was on returning to the hotel at night when she was entertaining her friends. Breakfast was fine and as expected, except that orange juice was, in fact, squash diluted with water before being poured into the machine. In a Mediterranean country such as Portugal, the fact that we couldn't even get decent orange juice was staggering. Overall, a very disappointing experience. Hindsight being what it is, what a shame that we didn't go to the other hotel in Barcelos that had nicer rooms and treated it's guests in a far better way.
