We have stayed here before, and that is the reason why we picked it again. Extremely centrally located in Funchal, just behind the cathedral, with shops and cafes/restaurants plus transport close by, it is ideal for a city holiday, especially during the winter season. It contains studios of various size, most with a practical kitchenette, so you can cook your own meal if you want to (and both "Sa" and "Pingo Doce" supermarkets are conveniently near). The roof terrace is great, and the best place to see the spectacular New Years Eve fireworks that Madeira is rightly famous for. It is also situated in a pedestrian street, so there is very little traffic. The reception staffers (Juana, Carlos and Chico) are very friendly and helpful and are there 24/7. Good beds, nice bathrooms, very neat and clean rooms make it an enjoyable stay. On the slightly negative side can be noted that the doors are thin and therefore you hear too much noise (comings and goings) from the hallway, and the lighting in our bathroom was a bit on the dark side, but apart from that we cannot fault it.

Da Se was just what we needed - basic, clean accommodation right in the centre of Funchal old town and only a few minutes walk to the sea. The outside room with a view to the street had a two plate electric cooker, fridge, microwave and kitchen sink, two beds, a small table and chairs and a roomy wardrobe. Wi-fi was available free in the lobby but we would have preferred access in the room. The cathedral is very close and the bell chimes every 15 minutes, so not great if you want a lie-in. The reception staff were helpful and friendly. The towels were changed every day of our week stay, but not the bed clothes or tablecloth, neither were the dishes or sink ever cleaned - we had to do this ourselves. Recommended for a no-frills, central base from which to explore Madeira.

I really want to thank apartamento da Se for making our stay wonderful. We stayed in Funchal (and apartamento de se) for 2 weeks and I am so happy to pick this place for all 14 nights.
The place is very clean and in a very center of Funchal which makes it very easy to get everywhere - buses, shops, beat, port, restaurants and etc. It just cannot be more central then it is.
Also the room is the best for a long stay (we booked a room, not a studio) as it has kitchen equipment, dishes, boals, small fridge, microwave and etc - everything I needed and more, so that you can by fruits, wine and drink it in the room or in terassa where you find wonderful view.
The staff is also really nice and always helping.
We did not have breakfast in apartamento as we liked the Pene Aqua nearby where we could have coffee and pastries. We made sandwiches in the room as it is really cheaper to buy bread, ham and cheese in the supermarket.
I would definetly stay in apartamento da Se next time when I come to Funchal (hopefully the price will not increase so much).
The only things to keep in mind when ordering the room:
1) no car parking, so if you plan to rent a car, have to park a little bit away and to walk.
2) no view good view from the room: external rooms have street view, interior rooms are quite dark, but still I think it is worth the price.

But afterall it is amazing place. We spent 1 night in Porto Santo and after seeing the room there we were waiting to go back home to apartamento da Se

If you like lazing by the pool all day then this is not for you, if you enjoy exploring your location this is ideal. Centrally located with shops, restaurants, buses and boats all within the immediate proximity this accomodation is a relaxed and friendly place to stay. The staff were efficient and helpful without being too familiar with the guests. Our apartment was spacious and overlooked the street near the entrance so we had a great view of city life. The kitchen area had no real cupboard space to house any groceries but with so many eating places locally this is not a problem - in fact it's a bonus. The air conditioning and wi fi are free unlike some other hotels and apartments I researched before travelling. If you want to visit other areas of the island don't bother with the organised tours catch one of the buses from the stands near the cable car entrance, these are used by the islanders to travel from village to village - great value for money (8 euros return to Santana). The "yellow" buses are generally used for the towns in the outskirts of Funchal and these can be found on the main street near the harbour.
