“Not fabulous, flawed major service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

We had arrived to Atlantida after a short flight from Lisbon. Funchal is beautiful, and the hotel is located in the center of the town, between the Lido and the old town, which is about 20 minutes by foot.
As we first entered the lobby, a nice receptionist had welcomed us, but an odious smell struck us. I can't explain why or what is the source of the smell, but it had lasted throughout all of our stay.
The rooms are clean and quite spacious, but the furnishing (incl. the beds) seems quite used and not very up-to-date, however sufficiently comfortable. More like a 3-star hotel than 4, but what can you expect with an attractive price as this accommodation option offers.
We found it very nice to use the compact kitchen and fix a fresh breakfast every morning. A shopping center is just a couple of steps away, and has a bakery which offers some very good breads and pastries.
One receptionist, Paula, was very nice and helped us with the tours, as it was our first visit on the island. I recommend to check all the options and plan the excursions before the arrival. We were quite limited in time (4 days), so we took 2 different daily trips - one to the western part of Madeira and another one to the eastern part, in order to explore as much as we coud. These activities are quite expensive, but definitely worthwhile if you choose them wisely. And choosing wisely, or so we learned, is certainly not picking automatically the excursions that your hotel offers; On the first trip, we were teamed with a portuguese-speaking group. Aside from feeling outsiders, we had to wait every time until the guide will explain in portuguese and then tried to understand her (good) english explanation, which was a very difficult mission, according to the microphone which was out of order. These things can happen, even on a serious and large tourist company, but assumingly will have a much smaller chance to occur, so you have to check carefully and make sure that you will pick an excursion with a group of people who speak your requested language.
Back to the hotel. Overall, we had a fairly nice stay there. Unfortunately, one incident affected our honor and respect to Atlantida; A nightshirt was disappeared from our room just after the maid cleaned it. We looked for it all over the place without any success. We didn't find it even after we landed back in our country. So, the nightshirt was disappeared, as it had been swallowed by the earth. This is not the main issue, however. During our presence, the staff checked with the maid and respond negatively, but a woman, who seems to be the manager, promised us that they will handle a more comprehensive search and mail us the nightshirt, if found. She promised to update us with the condition by e-mail and wrote down all of our details. Since today, almost 4 months after our stay, we haven't heard a word from Atlantida. I don't have a clue how a nightshirt could be disappeared without being taken, however, the neglect of the incident by the hotel staff is a concerning method of service these days. A hotel which respects itself must first respect its guests, a principle which surely haven't been taken care of in our matter.

“Great staff, lousy management”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2010

We encountered a major problem with our suite early during our stay which I reported to the reception staff. They could not have been more professional, prompt and helpful in resolving it. I have nothing but admiration for them.

Unfortunately it recurred and a member of the the senior so-called "management" became involved, simply because she happened to be present in reception when I drew attention to the problem. I have no doubt the reception staff would have solved the problem to my satisfaction. Unfortunately the "manager" was dismissive, obstructive and totally unwilling to resolve the problem to my satisfaction (to the evident embarrassment of the junior staff). Her attitude was, in short, "take it or leave it". She refused to consider a small reduction in the price of the apartment to compensate for the major inconvenience we had experienced.

Our time in Funchal was marred by our experience. This was unfortunate since the apartments are well-located and -appointed. If you decide to use the apartments, avoid any dealings with the management. They seem, shortsightedly, only to be interested in the bottom line. Deal only with the "junior" staff who are professional, helpful and superbly competent. If it weren't for them, I doubt the business would survive. My admiration for the junior staff is matched only by my contempt for the management.

Dear Sir,

Regarding your stay in Atlantida, we deeply apologise about any inconvenience that we have caused.
I also hope that you shall understand that we have to obey the Administration rules. No Reception Staff is allowed to reduce prices without the Administration authorization, in all cases the Administration decides and then informs the Manager. We also would like to apologise if any of the Atlantida Staff gave you any hope regarding the price reduction, which was not possible.
Again we do apologise and hope that you will be convinced regarding this misunderstanding.

Kind Regards,
Administration

Funchal Maderia
We stayed in Funchal and had four wonderful days. The people
are so friendly and have worked so hard to clean their Island up after the floods. Fuchal is up and running and waiting for all you vistors!
We stayed in Apartmentos Turistico Altantide in Rue Ivens ,
I can recommend these as being very clean and comfortable
Try the municipal gardens across the road for early morning breakfast or a nightcap the place is buzzing and very cheap!
If you rearly want to push the boat out, I recommend Reids for
afternoon tea.

“Very central and excellent value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2010

Our studio apartment was large, with a separated sleeping area. The kitchen was well equipped and the bathroom very new and fresh.

The central location was great. A large shopping complex, with a big supermarket, was 100m away and plenty of restaurants and bars were near. The seafront promenade, where most buses stop, was 300m.

Unfortunately, on the middle Saturday of our stay there was a major disaster when three hillsides collapsed after heavy rain, and mud and rockslides roared through the town. 40 people were killed. The apartments were unaffected (except no elec or water until the following day) and the staff were helpful with suggestions.

We were moved to a nearby hotel on Sat night, but by Sunday we were back to normal. The city, however, was completely devastated (see pictures).

One week later, things were getting slightly more normal. We recommend checking if you are intending to walk the Levadas in the next few months.

“Fabulous location and comfort”

The apartment was wonderfully located near the Municipal gardens, where there was lots going on when we visited (just before Christmas). Near to the bus stations and shops. Excellent bakery (Opan) 1 min walk away along with supermarket (in shopping centre on lower level).
Very nicely furnished, with lots of space and a very nice bathroom.
Kitchenette was well equipped but no sharp knife, veg peeler, corkscrew in our one!
Every day the room was cleaned and the bed made up.
Reception manned all day and into the evening - very friendly staff.
We paid extra for room with balcony but the view was not so great. Still nice to have a place to sit outside. But as hotel was very quiet when we were there, surprised they made us pay the extra rather than just upgrade.
If want to explore Madeira using the local buses to go on walks in the mountains / levadas, we can thoroughly recommend "Walk and Eat Madeira" by John and Pat Underwood.
