The courtesy and warmth from Filomena, the owner of Casa Papagaio, made our stay here so memorable.

The facilities are lovely, views are gorgeous, the rooms are well kept, clean and very comfortable. Breakfasts are a treat (with lovely, home-made jams); and dinner is available upon request - and what wonderful meals there are (the 1) chicken and 2) beef skewed on a laural branch are HIGHLY recommended). The hosts really do their best to accommodate their guests.

This B&B is perfect for those who enjoy a more laid back, relaxing kind of holiday. It is a 20 minute bus or taxi (10-15 minutes, around 10 Euros) ride away; we would highly recommend a car rental as there is much to see around Madeira (especially if you like long walks/hikes in the mountains or along the coast).

All and all, a wonderful place to stay whilst in the Funchal-area. We both needed a serious break from our hectic year and this place was instrumental in helping us achieve that.

The first thing you're greeted with is a glass of Madeira wine, and after that, just take it easy.

There's a beautiful swimming pool to take a dip in after going on one of the many hikes on the island, or maybe after lying in the sun all day.

You can order dinner in advance from their menu of typical Madeiran dishes for a very reasonable price (about 12 Euros per plate), which is highly recommended, especially the laurel branch beef skewers.

They have a garden in the back where they grow a great deal of fresh produce and fruit for their breakfasts. Apparently, arugula grows wild there and they picked huge bunches of it for us.

The owners are amazingly kind and generous.

Contact them ahead of time about transportation. They have a deal with a particular taxi driver who will take you to and from the airport for 25 euros, but it has to be arranged ahead of time. They also have a contact for car rentals at a very reasonable price that we took advantage of (I think it came out to about 25 euros a day?)

Highly recommended.

It's great to stay in someone's own house when it is a beautiful as Casa do Papagaio. The house is out of town in an area that is real Madeira. But 5 minutes walk and you can get the local bus into town. The owners were very hospitable and friendly.

We particularly loved their garden where they grew everything for the table, and organically. The view were fantastic as the location was high. They had friendly dogs and donkeys in the garden. You could walk out on the Lavada straight from the house. If you chose to eat in the food was beaautiful.

I would recommend it to a more impersonal hotel.

No doubt, if I have the opportunity to go again to Madeira, I will come back to Casa Papagaio :
- rooms are nice, I recommend the rooms in the main house. The studio close to the swimming pool seems excellent as well!
- the swimming pool is very pleasant and clean
- a limited number of room : quiet and peacefull ambiance
- excellent breakfast
- we had also dinner in the casa : excellent, very nice service and good price actually. Quality of food is equivalent to a premium restaurant in Funchal
- nice view on the sea from the swimming pool, the garden and the rooms - very romantic.
- friendly and intersting staff - especially Philomene (the owner)
This is a very good choice in Madeira, I definitively recommend it!
