“Good Accommodation at an affordable price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2008

I found the Residencial Pina by chance. My friends and I were going to Madeira for 4 days, and needed decent accommodation at an affordable price, and that is exactly what we got here.
Location wise, it does warn that it is up a hill, and for anyone who hasn't been to Madeira - it's is very mountainous!!! However, being young and fairly fit, this was not a problem. It was a 10 minute walk to the main area of shops and restaurants and it worked up a good appetite. Be aware though, the walk back up the hill is a fairly daunting one when you're full of food and alcohol.
The rooms were a good size, the bathrooms fairly modern and the views (if you pay the extra for a sea view) are lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was continental, nothing above average but good enough to start the day on.
It is a very small hotel so bar snacks etc are limited, but if all you're after is a sandwich, it's perfect. The pool is clean and refreshing. Loungers are provided free and you don't have to have plastic cups by the pool - you can have a beer in a pint glass!!
Overall, I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend for anyone who doesn't want anything too fancy, and doesn't want to break the bank.

“The dogs ...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2008

I actually found this hotel while I was in Porto Moniz and finding it a bit secluded there for a single traveller decided to move to Funchal for the last four nights of my trip. I read the reviews before I booked and noted that one said something about dogs barking. I didn't take much notice as there are dogs everyone. HOWEVER, had the review noted that the dogs barking happens every night, around 4 am and lasts for at least 20 minutes AND that it sounds more like the dogs are attacking each other viciously than just playfully barking I would never have reserved this hotel. There was nothing that could be done as this noise could be heard from every area of the hotel.

My other issue with this hotel was that when I emailed to book this room the lovely lady at the reception could speak perfect english and said she would be more than happy to help me plan my visit to Funchal once I arrived ... unfortunately she was not on any of the days that I stayed and of the rest of the staff no one could speak English/French/Italian or Spanish so I was left to my own devices.

All that being said it was not particularly expensive and the view was lovely. The walk uphill was definitely a work out however the downhill trip was wonderful. I wouldn't stay here again only due to the noise of the dogs which truely was horrific.

  • Liked — On my last day the few hours I was able to get translated into Portuguese the hosts were wonderful.
  • Disliked — Lack of places to eat close by, ants in bathroom, bed was very very hard

“Romantic, intimate and beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2008

Came to the Pina for special anniversary, and it was fabulous experience. Lovely location - the view from our balcony overlooked hills of Funchal down to the ocean: absolutely stunning! Room and bathroom good - nothing fancy (no trouser presses etc) but comfortable and clean. Small and friendly bar on the ground floor did drinks and snacks - and always perfectly chilled glasses for the beer! - though we tended to take drinks up to balcony to enjoy the view! Lots of the rooms have view over sea, others over the mountain. Breakfast was crossaints and rolls, ham, cheese & fruit - and generous portions. Staff were incredibly helpful, esp. Michaela. Easy walk (20 mins) downhill into old town - walk back uphill good for keeping fit(!) but taxi only 4-5 euros. Perfectly sited really - close to town but quiet and intimate with glorious views. Very much hope to go back one day!

“Great little hotel excellent location and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2008

This hotel turned out to be an excellent choice for us wanting a relaxing short break (though there were also families staying at the same time). The location is superb, overlooking the town and bay of Funchal. When you book see if you can get a room with sea view, you'll get a balcony and an unbeatable view.

The staff are courteous and helpful.

The bar (which acts as a local bar) is pleasant with an outside seating area. You can get snacks which are basic but tasty.

The breakfasts are simple bread and cold meat affairs, but there is a lot of it, we never managed to finish all they served up.

There is a small pool great for a short dip to cool off. There is parking for about 6 cars

The hotel is close to town but uphill so if you have trouble walking you'll need to make use of taxis. We walked most of the time and I don't think we were more than 20 mins from any part of the town ( but if you want to got to the hotel district you will need a cab

“Very good value in Funchal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2008

We came across this delightful Residencial quite by accident on our way down the hill from Monte. As we were looking for a place to spend three nights at the end of January we booked a room after being shown around.

The reception we received was warm and very helpful. The room we took had a lovely view of the bay and, despite being located above the bar, was very quiet. It was very spacious with kitchen facilities, an excellent large bathroom and a good sized balcony. Breakfast was simple and good. In all, this place is excellent value for money at 50 Euros a night, and is very well located for exploring the town. We will return!
